A completely resourced lesson to introduce critical readership of racial terms in ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ and ‘Of Mice and Men’ to iGCSE students.

Racism fundamentally shaped society and politics in 20th century America. This resource seeks to educate students that terms are used in these texts that are unacceptable in society today. While we may use offensive terms in our exam analysis, we will not be reading them aloud or having a discussion about whether they cause harm.

Students will be walked through learning opportunities that connect iGCSE lang and lit skills to the novel (mostly OMAM but easily swapped to TKAM).

This is how I have begun my iGCSE prose study for the last few years and found it to be a great way to ensure that all students feel safe and understand what is expected of them.

I am always looking for new ways to deliver this content and would gratefully receive any suggestions.
