This resource comprises 10 worksheets designed to secure, revise, and test knowledge of bass and treble staff notation. Aimed at Key Stage 3 students, each worksheet should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete, making them perfect for starter activities or for short tests. Similarly, they can be used in combination to form longer tests (including suitability for GCSE Music course tests); they can even be used to create up to two full 1-hour cover lessons for a supply teacher who may have no music specialist knowledge whatsoever. If you use them for the latter, you needn’t worry about coming back to a huge pile of marking either, because full answers are included in the resource pack, so students can mark and correct their own work on the day!
Specifically, the worksheets incorporate the following types of activity: identifying note pitches on the bass and treble staff; identifying words written out in bass and treble staff notation; writing given words out in bass and treble staff notation; unscrambling words that have been written out in bass and treble staff notation; converting words written out in bass staff notation to treble staff notation, and vice versa. A handy little guide to notation, which can be printed as small cards ahead of the lesson, has also been included so that students can simply work the notes out, even if they’ve never seen staff notation before – so everything has been thought of for your convenience.

Perfect for Year 7, this project takes students on an exciting journey which begins with the introduction of the Musical Alphabet. From here, they learn how to construct melodies using ordinary words. They are then introduced to simple 3-note chords - again using only the letters of the Musical Alphabet (no sharp or flat symbols, just letters). Students then learn how to match their words with chords, which becomes the basis of a melody with an accompaniment. The next part of the journey is to learn 4 of the basic music symbols and their numeric values in terms of beats (semibreve=4, minim=2, crotchet=1, quaver=1/2). Students group the symbols in a variety of ways so that the combined value is always 4, which creates rhythms. Finally, students are shown how to allocate these rhythms to the words that they have already matched with chords. This creates a rhythmic melody with an accompaniment. The project may end with students (in pairs or small groups) performing their compositions at the piano - a printable ‘note ruler’ is included with the download pack, which fits perfectly over most standard piano keys so that students know which notes to play. They may or may not perform the rhythms correctly, but the composing process, at a basic level, will have been properly learned.

This lesson focuses primarily on the Circle of Fifths, and this includes both the major and minor keys up to and including 4 sharps and flats. Students are taken through the information with both an information sheet, and a step-by-step PowerPoint. 14 x written/ notation tasks develop students’ knowledge of how keys are organised. This is not just a lesson in ‘what’ the Circle of 5ths is, students are taught how to create the circle from scratch. This reinforces understanding, and it also incorporates revision of major and minor scales, with a focus on how major scales create accidentals which become key signatures for major and relative minor keys.
Students also discover relationships between keys on the Circle of 5ths as a foundation to appropriate/ most common modulations: Dominant keys to the right/ Subdominant to the left/ Relative Major or Minor inwards or outwards on the rings. There are 10 x listening questions to conclude the lesson, in which students’ ability to distinguish between major and minor tonalities is tested. By the end of the lesson students will have a secure knowledge of the topic, and you – the teacher – will have more than enough scope to set additional activities as homework should you wish to, and suggestions are included in the teacher notes on the PowerPoint.

This is an Introduction to 4-part harmony. It is a full and comprehensive topic that would fit nicely into 3 x 1-hour lessons, but could be squeezed into 2 x 1-hour lessons with a gifted A-Level Music class if the final task was also set as homework.
The content is based around an introduction to Bach Chorales. There are 4 tasks in total.
Task 1 is: choosing chords to harmonise a melody. This is based on identifying the key , drawing out triads, and matching given melody notes with the triads/ chords, leading to a 4-part arrangement of the chord progression they have chosen, applying the techniques that are introduced throughout.
Task 2 is: Arranging for 4 parts. Students are given a fixed chord progression with which to harmonise the melody from task 1. Meanwhile the PowerPoint will take them through the following: Note Doubling; Consecutive 5ths ; Consecutive 8ves ; Consecutive Unisons ; Chord Spacing ; Six-Way check (SA; ST; SB; AT; AB; TB) to prevent banned consecutives.
Task 3 is: Using passing notes to create momentum. Students will be shown a model answer on the PowerPoint to Task 2, which then becomes the starting point for Task 3. The PowerPoint takes students through passing notes (what they are, what they do, and pitfalls of using too many at once) and then students are to add passing notes to the given arrangement.
Task 4 is: Working in a minor key. Students use the tonic minor to largely transfer their arrangement from the major, but new concepts are introduced for them to think about: melodic augmented 2nds (and using the melodic minor scale to avoid them); Tierce de Picardie cadence (where, how, and why it’s used); the tricky Mediant in minor keys.
From a teaching perspective, you have a full 20-slide Powerpoint making delivery of content easy, MP3 audios of the model answers so students can hear how nice good 4-part writing really sounds, Sibelius 5, 6, 7, and 7.5 templates if you want to use Music ICT to complete the tasks, 4 x PDF worksheets (that you’ll want to hand out one at a time because model answers become the next worksheet!) in case you don’t have/ don’t wish to use Music ICT.

A complete Harmony and Tonality Theory and Listening Programme of Study appropriate for any GCSE Music course.
This is an in-depth and fully resourced Programme of Study comprising six whole topics which will help your students to gain an excellent working knowledge of harmony and tonality at this level. It is recommended that the topics are taught in the following order:
(1) Chords and Cadences; (2) Major and Minor Scales; (3) Key Relations and the Circle of 5ths; (4) Modulation and Pivot Chords; (5) Modes and Pop Chords; (6) Dominant 7ths in Practice.
If you are teaching a 3-year KS 4 Programme, I would advise going no further than Topic 3 during Year 9, but all topics can be taught in Year 10 with plenty of time to develop and explore skills in Year 11.

For each question, there are 4 possible answers. In the Gold Run! each of the 30 questions are asked in turn and whilst any number of incorrect answers will sound a ‘buzzer’, the same question will stay on the screen until the correct answer is reached. Students need to answer all 30 questions to win. This is ideal as a whole class activity, that will last about 20 or 30 minutes. In the Strike Out! version of the quiz, the same 30 questions are grouped into 10 sets of 3, and an incorrect answer will trigger the 2nd question in the set, another incorrect answer will trigger the final question in the set, and if that question is answered incorrectly, that’s a Strike Out! and it’s somebody else’s turn to have a go (or the class starts again). This is a more exciting version (and competitive!). Both versions are great for revision - end of term/ half-term, or just for general revision of terminology/ language for learning.

This pack is one of six in a series from Rainy Night Music which covers over 350 key words, terms, and instruments listed as Language for Learning on all new UK GCSE Music syllabuses. There is more than a 90% crossover of key terminology between WJEC/ Eduqas, AQA, Edexcel and OCR, and this series covers them all.
This particular pack deals with Melody and Texture. Specifically, the 7 key-word groupings for these activity sets are: Melodic Decoration; Melodic Construction; Melody Foundations; Melodic Features; General Textures; Specific Textures; Textural Features.
For each topic stated, there are 8 key words (56 in total) which may form the basis of a theory and listening lesson, but will certainly link the words in a related and structured way - in much the same way MFL vocabulary is taught. Each topic has a word search designed to pre-teach the key words, a flash card template (for students to complete through independent research for homework) to pre-teach the definitions, a mix ‘n’ match activity to provide the actual definitions. Ideally, the actual theory and lesson will follow this to allow consolidation, and then the crossword activity serves as the revision activity. ALL activities have FULL answers provided with this download.
However, there is a great deal of flexibility in how you use and get the most out of these activities – my personal recommendation would be to re-use the mix ‘n’ match activity to create an additional resource (where the terms are not separated from one another), and use it for Quiz-Quiz-Trade starters and plenaries in Year 11.

This topic focuses on Ornamentation, specifically: Glissando/ Portamento/ Slide; Appoggiatura; Acciaccatura; Trill; Turn; Mordent; Pitch Bend. Students are taken through the information with both an information sheet, and a step-by-step PowerPoint. 15 x notation tasks develop students’ ability to recognise the symbols by name, then to be able to use the symbols themselves, and then to interpret realisations of the symbols. 10 x listening questions follow which develop students’ ability to focus on detail and musical memory - skills which are vital for the listening exam. By the end of the lesson students will know what ornaments look like, how they sound, and how they differ from one musical era to another.
All of this comes with a 28-slide animated and beautifully-presented PowerPoint, annotated with detailed teaching guidance notes, to make delivery of the topic smooth and efficient – plus a 3-page student information sheet, 4-page activity sheet, and 3-page detailed answer sheet. **A set of 3 tiered Music Bingo Games based on musical intervals. Level 1 would be suitable for beginners to reading music; Level 2 would be suitable for slightly more experienced readers; Level 3 for more confident students. **
Each of the 3 Bingo Games in this set has 15 different intervals, presented harmonically (stacked), rather than melodically (linear). Each game has 12 unique playing cards, which can very realistically be doubled up for a class of 24 students. Each game also has a master calling card containing 2 clues (one easier, one more difficult) to describe each of the 15 intervals on the calling card. Each unique playing card has a total of 9 of the 15 intervals on it.
This set of 3 is specifically designed to facilitate and accommodate progress, working really well as both a fun revision tool and a general learning tool.
The Level 1 game is suitable for beginners, being based primarily on major, minor, and perfect intervals with no accidentals at all. The intervals are all presented in the treble clef.
The Level 2 game is suitable for slightly more experienced musicians, being based primarily on major, minor, and perfect intervals using accidentals found in major and minor keys up to 4 sharps and flats. The intervals are presented in treble clef.
The Level 3 game is suitable for more confident musicians, being based primarily on augmented and diminished unisons, octaves, 4ths and 5ths – simple and compound – and major and minor 9ths and 10ths. Additionally, these cards are also presented in the bass clef, and have more accidentals than those in Level 2.
