Language Techniques - Tables and tasks

Well here is a little number to help your classes with those all important language devices for creative and persuasive writing. It will also help them learn all the language techniques ready for identifying them in novels and poems. In this pack there is a full table with the Language Teachniques, definitions and examples. The other two sheets are for the students to fill in during the lesson to help them build a work bank of these language techniques. I did this with my class and then set learning them for homework. They then were tested to see if they could spot examples of techniques and their meaning. Really simple, but beneficial resource.

AFOREST Techniques - Adverts and Leaflets

(1)
Here is an AFOREST lesson that gets students to pick out the persuasive techniques they can see in an advert. It then goes onto analysing leaflets; for this I usually go and grab a handful of leaflets from the Tourist Information or a service station. Then you can use the middle part of the lesson and the work sheets to get students to identify and explain persuasive techniques used. This is a great lesson if your students are creating a leaflet or brochure for their assessment. It has always worked really well with Y7 and 8s.

Newspaper Writing Lesson Pack - Persuasive language

(0)
This is a adapted version of my Persuasive Leaflet Lesson. Instead this is all based around writing newspaper articles. It also has extra resources such as an article to annotate and another lesson where they put their new found knowledge into their own article. (Please see free resources for several newspaper templates, if needed) In this pack you will find two power point presentations that are both on revising persuasive language devices and then trying to find them in an article. (Please note this is an article I have got online and put into a newspaper article format with images)The only difference between the top two power points is one gives the examples and definitions to the class and the HA one asks the class questions to challenge them to remember. To go with this lesson there is the article and a hand-out sheet that the class can fill in when looking at the article. This gives them questions to answer about the article to help them identify the features and devices used in a persuasive article. After the class has completed this lesson, you will want to know if they now can apply their learnt skills to their own article. Please find attached the 'Practising Writing a Persuasive Newspaper Article Lesson' which will give them information (Short video online - not necessarily needed, but link available) and a success criteria on how to write an article. Please see free resources for newspaper templates. This really helped prepare my class for an assessment on newspaper articles. The engaging tops such as homework stress article and too many assessments information got them talking and interested.
Creating a charity

Creating a charity

This is like a mini project as you will probably need three lessons to complete the task and students presentation. This lesson starts by asking the students questions that they have to think about when watching the news clips about refugees (internet access needed) The next slide tells the students what their task is and shows them other charities that are available to refugees at the moment. The final slide gives students a success criteria which they need to follow. This lesson aims to show students what being a refugee is a like and how we as a country could help.

Identifying AFOREST Techniques

This lesson will help students to identify AFOREST Techniques using Martin Luther King's speech and prior knowledge matching cards. As you can see above this pack includes a powerpoint lesson, MLK speech for the students to use, MLK speech annotated for the teacher, and AFOREST matching cards for the starter activity. This lesson has worked really well with my Y8s and 9s. It could also be used for Y7.

Refugee Boy: Context and Culture

This is a great lesson on the contextual and cultural links to the book Refugee Boy. It has a great little booklet that goes with the presentation that the students can work on throughout. It also includes selected pieces of information that can be stuck around the class for the students to pick the contexts that links and put it on the outlined hand. It worked really well with my Y8 class as it got them up and about finding out the relevant information and then moving onto using language techniques from Alem's point of view from the book.

This Shakespeare Research Booklet is a fantastic resource for introducing students into the world of Shakespeare. Every teacher struggles with how to teach the all important context section of the Shakespeare topic, and how to make it actually interesting. Well, here is the way to do it, and all you will need for one to two lessons is either a computer room or a Shakespeare book box from your school library. This booklet will teach the context for you, as it has key questions for the students to research, fun activities to complete, key quotations to understand, and a glossary the students can fill out.

This is a great starting lesson for students who are just about to start studying 'An Inspector Calls' it introduces all the context and the themes of the play. It also goes through the exam requirements for Edexcel. It also has video links to BBC Bitesize revision videos that help students to fill in the Themes and Context sheet attached. (Internet needed for the links) This helped my students get down the basics and start making links to the themes that run throughout the play.

A Christmas Carol - annotating/planning/models/writing

A Christmas Carol annotation, analysis and essay writing for beginners! Two developing lessons here - starting with the teacher showing how to annotate the first extract (description on Scrooge), and then getting students to use questions on the second extract (Fred extract) which then leads them onto annotating the final extract alone. Once all this is completed, go onto the second PPT which contains an essay plan with models of the plan and of a paragraph. Then students can have a go. Lots here - a full week of lessons which helps you get students independently thinking about extract analysis and planning in a structure. This really helped my Y10 get stuck into analysis and showed them they could do it without me. The plan and model then helped them create some 5+ essays on their first attempt. Enjoy! Please note - extracts and images are not included in the price - these do not belong to me - you’re paying for the lesson structure, plans, models and questions on extracts.

A Christmas Carol - Essay Plans with analysis

Here are four essay plans for ACC. I created these for my Y11 in the lead up to their exams - they are great for showing students how to look at multiple meanings of keywords and how they are used as methods. Context is added on some of them, but they are mainly for showing analysis. Questions planned in PPT: Starting with this extract, how are the ghosts presented as a catalyst (promote and build up to) for Scrooges transformation? Starting with this extract, how does Dickens present Scrooge’s relationship with his family? Starting with this extract, how does Dickens present the Ghost of Jacob Marley? Starting with this extract, how does Dickens present society’s attitude to poverty? Happy planning!
