This hands-on resource is designed to help children strengthen their understanding of place value using base ten blocks. The clip cards cover numbers from 11 to 50, organized into four number sets:
11–20
21–30
31–40
41–50
Each card features a visual representation using base ten blocks (tens and ones), along with three answer choices. Children are encouraged to clip the correct number using a peg, promoting fine motor skills alongside numeracy. Alternatively, they can use a dry-erase marker to circle the correct answer if the cards are laminated.
Laminating is highly recommended for durability and reusability.
Skill Focus:
Recognising and counting base ten blocks (tens and ones)
Understanding place value (numbers 11–50)
Matching visual quantity to numerical representation
Developing number sense and subitising
Building fine motor strength through peg use
Encouraging independent, self-checking practice
Perfect for:
Place value practice
Independent math centers
Small group interventions
Early finishers
This resource is ideal for EYFS, KS1, or any learners needing concrete support with understanding numbers 11–50.
This engaging maths resource pack is designed to help young learners practise addition and subtraction through hands-on, visual learning. Ideal for EYFS, KS1, SEN, or EAL students, this activity supports early calculation skills using concrete objects like counters, blocks, or play dough.
What’s Included:
1 activity sheet with 4 reusable calculation templates (2 for addition and 2 for subtraction).
11 pages of calculation cards featuring:
- Addition and subtraction within 5 and 10
- Each card contains one addition or subtraction problem
- Clear colour-coding based on operation and difficulty level
Colour Coding System:
To help with easy sorting and differentiation, each card background is colour-coded:
Turquoise – Additions within 5
Beige – Subtractions within 5
Orange – Additions within 10
Purple – Subtractions within 10
How It Works:
Choose a card: The child selects a card with an addition or subtraction problem.
2.Use the calculation template to:
- Represent each number with real objects (e.g., play dough balls, counters, blocks).
- Place items in the first two sections to match each number in the problem.
- Fill in the third section to show the total (for addition) or what’s left (for subtraction).
Record the number sentence: Underneath the visual sections, the child writes the matching number sentence, aligning each number below the corresponding group of objects.
Example: For 4 + 3, the child places 4 objects in the first box, 3 in the second, 7 in the third, and writes “4 + 3 = 7†below the model.
Why You’ll Love It:
Promotes conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction.
Encourages active learning with manipulatives.
Clear visual structure supports independent work and small-group activities.
Differentiated by colour for easy progress tracking and ability grouping.
This resource is perfect for use in the classroom, maths stations, intervention groups, or home learning. All you need to add are some small objects to count with!
This hands-on and engaging Ten Frame Maths Activity is perfect for EYFS, KS1, or SEND learners developing their number sense and early addition skills.
Designed to be laminated for repeated use, this interactive resource supports the ‘Flip it, Make it, Write it’ structure:
Flip it:
Children select a card at random from the set of 43 ten-frame cards (numbers within 10). Each card displays a combination of red and yellow counters.
Make it:
Pupils recreate the ten frame they picked using either:
Red and yellow counters provided in the resource (20 of each)
Physical counters commonly found in classrooms
Write it:
Using the included 5-box addition sentence chart, children break down what they see into a written number sentence. For example, a card showing 6 red and 1 yellow counter becomes:
1 | + | 6 | = | 7
What’s Included (PDF Download):
Preview page of the activity
Reusable activity template
43 Ten Frame cards (within 10)
Printable counters: 20 red and 20 yellow
