I found that students were making very weak comments about the effects of poetic devices in poetry. Therefore I created this mind map that can be used as a placemat or classroom wall poster. It encouraged students to look at the writer's intention more, rather than just writing "this has a positive effect". I will be using with AQA Power and Conflict poetry GCSE, however it is flexible.

Paper 2: Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives Looks at planning answers for Paper 2. The students look at the general ideas behind how to answer each question. This can then lead on to them writing full answers. My class get easily overwhelmed and I found that this broke things down for them. The extract is taken from somebody else and not my own, however I created the activity. Section B revision sheet helps students to quickly brainstorm ideas and reminds them of the mark scheme.

A range of lessons (lasted me around 2 weeks) talking Y10 students through their first attempt at language exam paper 1. Could be edited to become more challenging.

AQA English Language Paper 1A questions focusing on Nicholas Nickleby extract. Used as part of a unit named “An Introduction to 19C literature” looking at both lang and lit skills. Used as the first two lessons with Y13. Contains an intro to the course with quick quiz. Leads the students to consider existing knowledge of language and CLA. Moves onto a transcript and a straightforward analytical task introducing students on how their answers should be structured, followed by a peer assessment activity. Contains information on CDS satisfying A01 and A02. Includes further reading.

1-2 hr masterclass to go over essentials around regional variation for Section A of paper 7702. Includes revision of theory (A02) and A01 terminology. Students then have a go at answering the sample questions. Mark schemes on AQA website.

Student must use extended metaphor to develop a piece of writing. Includes examples and materials for a class model. I used a Life of Pi clip to engage students.

Lesson (or may last for more) looking at the features of travel writing. Was used with Y12 Edexcel student though could have other uses.
