Differentiated reading tasks for a very mixed ability top/middle set Y10 French group.
B/C text focuses on recognition and usage of key verbs in the perfect and imperfect tense.
A* version assumes pupils are already confident with the 2 tenses and introduces a range of advanced structures which they can use to develop their work.

Text to introduce a class who are already familiar with the perfect tense of regular and irregular verbs with avoir to the idea of verbs which use etre as the auxiliary.
Used as a challenging lesson for top set Y8 but would be suitable for KS4.
1) Reading for gist - give each paragraph a title (EXT: Come up with your own title for the last line as this doesn't have one provided).
2) Categorise verbs into avoir aux and etre verb (EXT: Identify the 2 types of verb that use etre - movement and reflexives)

Writing tasks for Year 8 studying the topic of Holidays (Expo 2).
Developed in response to requirements of the new GCSE proposals, as the current Y8 will be the first affected.

Simple true or false quiz on topic of the Occupation. Used as extension work for a few pupils in a Y9 class watching Au revoir les enfants but equally could be used as starter/plenary.
Read and run activity for bottom set Y8.
4 fairly straightforward texts about holidays in the past tense, with 15 questions for pupils to answer in teams by reading the texts around the room.
The last 3 questions require them to answer in French by finding the correct phrase.
A reading task I made for a Y9 bottom set beginners Spanish group who have been learning Spanish for about 10 weeks so far.
The main aim is to recognise the difference between 'soy de' and 'vivo en' with place names, but there's plenty of added detail to make it a bit more challenging.
I&'ve made the font size big so it can be copied 2:1, giving A5 sheets.
Goes with Expo 2 - Module 1 - Unit 1 (Mon album de famille).
Starter - matching 3rd person sentences to characters.
Key 3rd person phrases.
Presentation and practice of -ER verbs.
Work on pronunciation.
Writing descriptions of family members.
Donner/garder les points game to finish.
Recognition of differences between perfect and present tenses (a basis for discussion/questioning when going through answers).
Extension gets pupils to apply this knowledge and use the perfect tense.
To revise for a reading assessment towards the end of Expo 2 Module 3 (Les sorties), testing knowledge from Modules 1, 2 and 3.
Includes free time activities, perfect tense, modal verbs.
Print p.1 on plain paper and give a sheet to each group to highlight key words, etc.
Print p.2 on different colours of card and cut into strips (each question on a different strip).
Give each group Q1 - when they have written their answer on the strip of card, they bring it to you and you give them Q2. It's a race to finish first (or get the most questions answered within the time limit).
My pupils loved this and asked if we could do it again soon.
