The Vietnam War: Gulf of Tonkin Incident & the Outbreak of War.

The purpose of this lesson is to show pupils how the Gulf of Tonkin Incident and then resolution acted as a trigger for the start of the Vietnam War. Pupils will begin by studying a primary document of a telephone conversation between President Johnson and the President's Special Assistant for National Security Affairs regarding the incident. Pupils will consider a series of questions to figure out what has happened. Pupils will then be introduced to the incident through a blow by blow events sheet - pupils will be encouraged to summarie each key event of the incident before identifying and explaining its main features. this is then consolidated though a video (embedded). Pupils will then consider the bigger picture of the other events which led up to the outbreak of war - identifying and explaining them from past lessons before being encouraged to judge the most significant reason. Pupils will then demonstrate their knowledge with an exam style question linked the the Edexcel scheme either in lesson of for homework. All videos are embedded with instructions for activities to be found within the PowerPoint presentation. Please see my story for other Vietnam resources.

The focus of this lesson is to build upon the delicate balance of world powers in the 1930’s with Hitlers Anschluss of Austria in 1938 and fits into the bigger picture of ‘Why had international peace collapsed by 1939’? **Hook: **students are handed hook sheet as they enter to instantly complete focusing around recalling 5 key facts about Hitler’s foreign policy. **Starter: ** students watch a video (optional but embedded) are challenged to suggest why they may be surprised by the message of the interview video. Teacher then links into and introduces the lessons intention. Main task 1: Students are provided with a key information sheet breaking the stages of Anschluss down – students to highlight 3 key features of each stage. Students are then challenged to write a series of questions based on the information to quiz each other about the stages of Anschluss. Students then to meet back at their table and complete their table sheet in more detail. Show consolidation video (embedded). Students then to explain why Hitler was able to achieve Anschluss in 1938. Structure strips and success criteria (MARK Scheme) for differentiation. Plenary: Students to apply their acquired knowledge to an exam style question – structure strips are provided for differentiation and a mark scheme to allow students to peer / self assess their answer afterwards as a plenary. (Home work included for source evaluation).

The purpose of this lesson is to enable students to explain the impact and then longer term consequences of appeasement / Munich Agreement and Sudeten Crisis. Hook: Students to enter and to complete a quick source of evidence settler based on appeasement. Students receive this as they enter the class from another student or the teacher (to be printed off the presentation) Teacher takes feedback and introduces the lessons intentions and aims. Main task 1. students to play a mix -pair-share activity ‘hey did you know?’ all explained in the PP and linked to the shorter term impacts of the Munich agreement, there can then be a quick memory test before students detail some of these in their books / applied to a quick GCSE exam prep question (structure strips provided for differentiation). Main task 2: Students then complete a summary activity about specifically France and Britain’s reaction to Hitler’s further occupation of Czechoslovakia/ combined with an embedded video. Students are the n to use both of these as resources to complete a quick ‘newspaper style’ summary sheet detailing this information to go into their books. This was graded an ‘outstanding’ lesson. Hook starter: As pupils enter the room the presentation will display an autonomously moving spot light to reveal a picture clue of the London Blitz to hint about the context of the lesson. Lesson Intention and differentiated outcomes. (SMSC) Video links are included within the presentation. This lesson could be used without the need for exercise books as it is a learning stations based lesson for the most part. I have included 5 stations however these could be less / more dependent upon size and ability of your class. Eg: 1. War time memories / experience of the Blitz. 2. Propaganda posters (Blackout and recruitment to help during air raids). 3. Anderson / Morrision shelters. 4. Text book / war time newspapers 5. Interactive station (War time house / Interactive Air Raid map). Pupil’s then consolidate their judgment through answering a structured 8 mark exam style question. If time I then ask my pupils to peer assess with WW / EBI. Instructions and advice on how they lesson is to run can be found in the description of the presentation. Hook starter: As pupils enter the room the presentation will display an autonomously moving spot light to reveal a picture clue of evacuated young people boarding a train to hint about the context of the lesson. Lesson Intention and differentiated outcomes. (SMSC) Video / MP3 sounds clips (with links) are embedded within the presentation. The aim of this lesson is to allow young people to explore and empathise with the evacuated young people during WWII. Pupils begin filling out a tag for themselves (reminiscent of the time) before being asked to write a short blurb about their partner to appeal to a host family. Pupils then pack their suitcase catagorise what they believe boys/girls would have needed to take with them. I then split my pupils up and place them in different areas of the classroom (locations evacuees would have been sent to). The main task involves studying an evidence pack to allow pupils to decide of the evacuation process was a success or failure by the British Government. Pupil's then consolidate watching a short video (embedded) before forming their judgment through answering a structured 8 mark exam style question. If time I then ask my pupils to peer assess with WW / EBI. Instructions and advice on how they lesson is to run can be found in the description of the presentation. The lesson begins with pupils being handed a letter from the Mayor of Montgomery pupils interpret and infer from it to guess the focus of the lesson. Pupils are introduced to Rosa Parks and asked to discuss what they already know about her and segregation in the south. There is a video (embedded) to introduce pupils to Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat. Pupils are provided with a fact file sheet highlighters are to be used to assess why she was significant as many other women before her had refused to give up their seats. Pupils are then required to circulate the classroom to piece together the events of the bus boycott which followed (additional activity suggestions are suggested as well) Pupils watch a video to embed knowledge of events. I then use whiteboards as a plenary to assess this e.g. each write an event and arrange themselves in chronological order. (Further advice can be found in the description of the presentation. This lesson is designed to inform students about the TET offensive in order to enable them to explain why it was a significant turning point in the War leading to US public opposition. Students then will study different interpretations of the TET to then explain why they interpret it differently. Hook starter: A Selection of images for students to study upon entrance to class encouraging them to reflect upon how they would feel if they were seeing these images on TV. Students watch a video clip (Embedded) and are supplied with contextual knowledge via the PEEP SHEET if required. Students are encouraged to explain the significance of the TET and why it led to increased public opposition. Students then apply their knowledge to an exam style question (Why do interpretations one and two have different opinions about the success of the TET). WAGOL is then provided as students peer assess. Lesson ends with a rounding up of students opinions about why the TET was a turning point. easily enough to cover more than one lesson. This pack contains two lessons. Lessons outcomes are: Expected: To study the life of a famous Naval soldier. (SMSC) Challenge: To explain a famous battle at sea, its causes and consequences. Stretch: To use source evidence to support an exam style question. The first lesson consists of a case study regarding Jack Cornwell and his importance to a ‘famous naval battle’. At the age of only 16, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross and was the youngest British to take part in the battle). Pupils will study his story from a cut out card sort activity catagorising information about his life. Pupils then reassemble to card sort into a jigsaw to reveal that he died as a result of the Battle of Jutland. Pupils are then encouraged to complete further research about other British men who fought in the battle (computers will be required of this, otherwise I have set it as a Homework). The second lesson allows pupils to study source evidence (primary and secondary) to help reach the lessons outcomes. Pupils then consolidate the past 2 lessons with an exam style question. Then pupils can use the success criteria to peer assess with WW / EBI to identify areas of improvement regarding their extended writing. The presentation itself is aesthetically pleasing and engaging with lots of colour including moving Giff images. All videos are embedded (links also provided). I highly recommend having an ‘interactive’ station for the second lesson as there is a fantastic website (link included) which allows pupils to listen to first hand accounts of the battle from survivors. The lessons finish with how the Battle is remembered today 100 years on.

The purpose of this lesson is to introduce pupils to The VC and their tactics. Pupils will begin with a literacy inquiry into 'Guerrilla Tactics' before being introduced to a short video - pupils are encouraged to note down all the tactics they can spot. Once receiving feedback the teacher will then instruct pupils to rank what they believe at the most effective tactics (judgment line/ whiteboards / sticky notes to explain most effective tactic). Pupils will then be introduced to the VC tunnels and assess two sources of evidence to inquire into the most useful to understand VC tactics (GCSE Edexcel mark scheme included to self / peer assess). The purpose of this assembly is to encourage students to reflect upon the potential of growth mind-sets. Especially good to run before an assessment point or during revision periods. All videos and songs are embedded. Assembly starts with questioning about what a growth mind set could be before showing a video clip of ‘People Are Awesome’ showing humans completing amazing feats. Teacher to link this back to how they all have growth mind sets. Teacher asks again what a growth mind-set could be. Teacher the shows video of how a growth mind-set can help students achieve (example the tortious and the hare). Students are quized on example of what could be considered a growth mind set or a closed mind-set. Finishes with a prayer. Delete school banner and replace with your own logo.

The aim of this lesson is to introduce the concept of ‘Black Power’ to pupils. The lesson begins with pupils inferring and discussing a source of evidence showing a black man tied down by the non-violent events which has happened so far during the Civil Rights Movement - this leads into the introduction of the need for violence to achieve black peoples aims. Pupils watch a short video on the Mexico Olympics of 1968 to help introduce this – before being introduced to the Black Panthers through a listening activity from an interview with Huey Newton and a study of the Panthers 10-point programme. The main task involves pupils studying a card sort and categorizing the successes and failures of the movement. Pupils could mix - pair - share to help do this or simply working individually or in pairs before forming an overall judgment on the success of the movement. Pupils then consolidate their learning with a short video before answering an exam style balanced answer statement question. The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students the causes and consequences of the Industrial Revolution. Starter activity is quiz quiz trade (explained in the PP) to introduce students to the main causes of the revolution. There is an opportunity to watch an introductory video the the revolution before starting the main task. Main task: students conduct a museum walk around the classroom / corridor categorizing the main causes and consequences of the revolution (Transport / agriculture / population / factories & industry / education). the outcome of this lesson is for students to have formed a judgment on the most significant factor in Hitler’s foreign policy which led to the outbreak of WW2. LEsson begins with students being handed a recall of learning starter sheet which they can begin immediately linked with Hitler’s overall aims (Instructions on PP for students). students will work through a series ofstudent led tasks guided by the teacher: students watch a short video (embedded) wilst the teacher asks that students note down on white boards / in their book what Hitler’s main aims were (Differentiation: Task specific students with looking out for certain policies). students note down on A1 paper Hitler’s main foreign policy aims before the teachers handing out key policy documents individually along with the student proforma. students are tasked with summarizing they key policy on their sheet before memorizing it to the best of their ability. students then circulate the room and teach each other in their area of expertise regarding Hitlers policy e.g. The Sudetenland students then return to tables and add to their A1 paper with how each factor led to WW2. Plenary is a judgment line task around the room or using sticky notes on the board where students then form their opinion on the most significant factor. students can then answer an exam style question (balanced answer / judgment question works best. The purpose of this lesson is to not only inform students about Hyperinflation but to challenge them to think about it in the bigger picture, how it was a product of the T.O.V and how it links into national and international impacts in the longer term. Students enter with a task to immediately complete (Pictures will be scattered around the classroom, students are to study the picture and on a sticky note write down what they believe the lesson title will be - something along the lines of Hyperinflation (Critical thinking). Teacher then goes through some starter quick fire true / false questions with the students to recall learning. Students think pair share what Hyperinflation could mean before it is outlines by the teacher (opportunity for student rewards). Students then watch a short embedded video about how Germany was impacted by the TOV which led to Hyperinflation. The main task is centered around a memory activity regarding the consequences of Hyperinflation. students work in pairs to complete the card pairing activity before mix-pair-sharing the consequences between themselves. Again opportunity for a consolidation ‘memory test’ where students could compete for prizes. Students then complete and exam style GCSE question assessing their acquired knowledge (structure strips provided for differentiation). Students to peer assess for a plenary.
