This presentation examines the formation of aretes, pyramidal peaks, hanging valleys, truncated spurs, ribbon lakes and so on. There are plenty of photographs to help explain the formation of these features and several questions based on a map extract of the area around Helvellyn to help students to identify these features on a 1:25 000 map.

This is a test on China which is best suited to Key Stage 3 students. It has questions on population distribution, the One Child Policy, air pollution and development. It runs to six pages.

This is a complete lesson for introducing India to classes in KS2 and KS3. It includes a link to a video, from which students take notes about human and physical features of the country and asks students to imagine that they are a travel writer, working for an imaginary company called ‘Indian Inspirations’, A prompt slide gives examples of the place names, features and describing words they could use. The template is included for their submission to the editor, which is 200 words of copy for an introductory page in a travel brochure.

This presentation was designed to be used with Year 12 students who were beginning to think about Post-18 choices and the possibility of studying at university. It gets students to think about their aspirations and to create ambitious, realistic and ‘insurance’ pathways to motivate them in their studies at Key Stage 5.

This is an assessment for Year Eight students, though any KS3 student could probably attempt it. It consists of a question paper, a mark scheme and a resource sheet. The questions are about terminology, features of the upper course, formation of a waterfall, a meander in cross-section, water pollution and water treatment.

This is an assessment to test pupils' knowledge of the Superpowers Unit of Work. It includes questions on what makes a country influential, analysis of graphs, comprehension and the issues surrounding Mexican immigration to the USA.

This is the first scheme of work we cover with our Year Seven students once they’ve done their skills and map work basics. It covers the make-up of the British Isles, the location and function of its main cities, an explanation of our temperate maritime climate, a lesson on relief rainfall, a skills exercise to do with migration that involves flow lines and lessons on population distribution, inequality and the North-South divide. It assumes that you have copies of Geog.1 in your department, but you could always edit those references out and substitute questions and activities from books that you do have.

This is presentation Number Two in the unit 'Migration and Identity'. It explores the difference between voluntary and forced migration with unusual examples. It talks about push factors and pull factors and relates them to New Orleans (Hurricane Katrina, 2005) and Australia ('Ten Pound Poms', 1951). Students are encouraged to consider the push and pull factors at play in both these examples. There are several striking images (e.g. Serbian migrants queueing up in a snowstorm for free food) and has a number of activities aimed at students of different abilities.

This assessment was used at the end of the first unit of work we covered with our Year Seven classes. It concerns the differences between human and physical Geography and includes questions about plans, latitude and longitude, major global features and a descriptive task relating to Everest Base Camp.

This lesson explores how managing climate change involves both mitigation (slowing it down) and adaptation (coping with the change). Students look at carbon capture as a mitigation strategy, at international agreements and at attempts to combat rising sea levels. There are a number of striking images in this presentation that prompt discussion and various tasks for students to attempt, including discussions in groups.

This presentation looks at the different ways in which development can be measured. It discusses how single measures of economic development can hide inequality and, therefore, not show us the whole pictures. It considers the circumstances in which development can be held back (e.g. Syrian conflict) and looks at the example of global patterns of literacy. There are a number of engaging tasks and thought-provoking images throughout the presentation, which is aimed at the AQA 9-1 Geography syllabus.

This resource was used as part of a unit to cross the bridge between KS3 and GCSE. It aims to develop students' geographical skills. This lesson clarifies the difference between war and conflict. Students are then given a number of 'well-known' conflicts to look at in more detail, following which there is an exercise that involves looking at the parts of the world where there is the greatest tension.

This presentation gets students thinking about how hard it might be to make a living in an environment such as Snowdonia or the Lake District National Park. It looks at the challenges of two activities in particular: sheep farming in the Welsh Hills, where the physical landscape is the main issue and forestry in Cumbria where conflict between ramblers, mountain bikers and horse riders has to be managed. There are, as ever, a number of tasks for groups and individuals and a review from a rather angry walker who let rip on Trip Adviser to which students must respond as if they were a warden at Winlatter Forest.

This presentation explores the kinds of activities that are on offer in Snowdonia National Park. It considers the advantages and disadvantages of having many thousands of people on the mountains at once, many of whom are unprepared. It focuses particularly on the issue of second home ownership and there is a map showing the distribution of second homes in the National Park. There are a number of engaging tasks and pictures to focus students of all abilities.

This presentation looks at the management of National Parks on a large and small scale. It considers the aims of National Parks and looks specifically at what the Snowdonia NPA is doing. It also includes a case study of a small eco-friendly guest house in North Wales where sustainability is taken to the limit. Students are asked to consider whether it is necessary to go to such extremes!
