Percentile charts and cell differentiation - Cells and Control.
The lesson is part of a series of lessons that cover topic two of the new GCSE (to be sat in 2017).
The lesson start by looking at why percentile charts are used, this is done by levelled examples followed by some teacher led questions. The lesson then moves on to cell differentiation that is formatively assessed with a hinge point question. The lesson concludes with an exit ticket.
The lesson is specific the new Edexcel 9-1 GCSE and part of topic 5.
The lesson starts with a review of the previous learning. Before a circus of information gathering, comprising of 4 tasks to help the students take ownership of their learning. The students the attempt a worksheet with an extension task built in to the lessons. The students finish the lesson with an exam question.
This CPD session is set to last about 20 mins. I used this technique extensively as a science teacher; both to assess misconception and to drive differentiation. The presentation includes examples from other subjects as well as the theory and justification to using them.

The lesson reviews a couple of extreme examples of obesity ad obesity surgery with differentiated questions to ensure the students stay focused. They then review BMI and the problems with it as a measure of obesity. There is a brief discussion of smoking before the student answer a Hinge point question to direct learning to different tasks on a worksheet. The lesson concludes with an exam question.
Topic three lesson four focuses on Alleles. The lesson starts with a review of previous learning. The lesson moves onto an independent research task to help embed meta-cognitive regulation, this is the discussed via teacher and slides to ensure pupils have understood. Understanding is assessed via a hinge point question and a bronze (mini lesson), silver (structured task) or gold task (structured open) is allocated to evidence differentiation and give the students the most appropriate task. students then get to see and exam question which is modelled on the board before the lesson concludes with an exit ticket.
The lesson looks at interdependence between organisms. This is done by looking at food chains, food webs and key language associated with this wordy topic.
The lesson concludes with an exam question and model answer.
Topic three lesson one focuses on DNA. The lesson starts with an administrative starter ensuring that presentation is to Ofsted Standard. The lesson moves onto discuss DNA using images and key points that build on KS3. Understanding is assessed via a hinge point question and a silver or gold task is allocated to evidence differentiation and give the students the most appropriate task. The lesson gives the students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge with and exam style question and markscheme before the lesson concludes with an exit ticket.
Topic three lesson six focuses on mutations. The lesson starts by reviewing the previous learning on punnet squares. The lesson them looks at addition, substitution and deletion before some awe and wonder images of mutations in humans and animals. The students then have the human genome project briefly explained before a short practical activity and then a high level comprehension on albinism and eye colour. The lesson concludes with an exit ticket.
The lesson starts by establishing what exam success looks like before an independent learning opportunity in which student research questions based on the hand-out slides (in the ppt). The lesson finishes with an exam question and markscheme.
This lesson is aimed at promoting independence and assumes the students have already covered the content.
The lesson starts by looking at predator prey relationships, this develops into some graph analysis. The next task looks at biotic factors ad how the change food webs. There is then a 10 mark quiz, an outcome differentiated worksheet and an exam Q to finish.
The lesson looks at endangered species and moves to discuss deforestation. Students then have to design their own ecosystem before there understanding is demonstrated with work sheet. The lesson concludes with an exam question.
The lesson provides a definition of continuous and discontinuous variation, the students then apply their gained knowledge to a variety of graphs to identify different variation. Inbuilt into the lesson is a hinge point question, this is a string AFL device that directs learning to a distinct differentiated task. The students get an explanation with various examples of environmental and inherited variation. They then get the opportunity to show off their knowledge with two outcome differentiated worksheets. The lesson concludes with an exit ticket.

These are 'plug and play' lessons designed for ease of application and good to outstanding lessons. I am very pleased with this series of lessons as it has inspired a difficult year 10 cohort and increased motivation in science.
Revision timetable and resource bank. To use: print and give to the students, put it up in the lab, send it home to parents or publish as an electric copy.
QR codes and hyperlinked topic titles take the students to a revision resource (mostly BBC Bitesize), on most days there is a key diagram and a selection of subtopics to revise.
This resource is designed to chunk the challenge of revision, giving students two months to revise every topic required for the mock exam that Edexcel are using to calibrate results. The calendar starts on the first of March and goes up until two days before the first exam.
Revising is a vital skill that many teachers neglect to teach their pupils. Most students struggle to plan their revision and rely on pre-exam cramming, as these students will not sit their final exam this year we need to ensure we help them retain the information. Spreading it out like this makes it an achievable challenge and will help them with long-term retention.
This is a revision resource that encourages independence and learning of key outcomes. This would take a couple of lessons to complete as there are multiple tasks to improve understanding.
The lesson starts by establishing a definition of GMO. It then moves on to reviewing a couple of videos with guided questions to promote thinking. The lesson looks to engage student in a paired research project in the exam board specific species before posing an exam question. This is just the Learning outcome sheet to the edexcel module CB8. The learning outcome sheet has space to RAG the learning outcomes, log the exit ticket score from the lessons and has a QR code to scan and complete further revision.
The resource is an opportunity to embed student accountability and student led tracking. This will only be applicable if used with my other forces and energy resources available to purchase.
