This lesson contains: A discussion of Henry’s pastimes and how he had enjoyed them. A general overview of the importance of the arts at the time. A task where students study an image of people having fun and have to notice types of fun. An activity for students to use a YouTube video (old video!) to complete a multiple choice worksheet. An opportunity for students answer a question to describe features of Elizabethan entertainment. A plenary with some of Shakespeare’s obscure quotes to decode. This lesson contains: A brief background to Henry, which is done via a slide and then an information page where students read about his early life and answer some questions on the board. A main activity to study the different ways Henry kept control and to complete a graph. On the graph, the students will make a note of Henry’s solution and write in accordance with what problem he solved. This is something that students enjoyed doing but can also be achieved by giving them a table too, or having them make notes. A judgement task to weigh up how well Henry was able to solve his problems. Students have an opportunity to make a judgement and evaluate using explanations. This lesson contains: A ‘do it now’ starter that can be edited to reflect past learning you have been covering. An overview of Hitler’s invasion of Britain, in particular the Channel Islands. There is a video from YouTube that summarises the situation in the Channel Islands. Students learn about the four camps that were built on Alderney to house prisoners, two of which were concentration camps with European Jews and political prisoners. As the teach works through the slides on each, students annotate their maps of each camp and who was held there. A main activity which is a guided read about Norderney Camp. Student use what they have read to complete the worksheet with the key consequences of its existence on the people held there and on British citizens. A review task to design a suitable memorial. Background information about Afghanistan’s location and history leading up the 1979 from Takari to Amin and the revolts of the Mujahaddin. The students discuss the potential Soviet reaction. A task to consolidate the knowledge so far about the reasons for the Soviet invasion using the information provided. An overview of the Soviet invasion and the events, and then the consequences including the Carter Doctrine, Olympic Boycotts and the failure of SALT 2. This lesson contains: An introduction to the methods used by the Nazis to control people. A YouTube video which summarises the main methods of fear and terror used to control the masses, including the SS, SD, Gestapo, Concentration Camps and the Courts. Students use Cornell Notes to make notes as it plays. A longer, indepth look at concentration camps, including the spread of them, the way people were treated and the badges. An indepth literacy task to write an exam-style question as the students research using the information sheets provided. This is advanced, as the students not only read the info, they have to process the info and then convert it into an exam response all at the same time. This lesson contains: A starter to recap some of the knowledge so far in the course. A discussion about the success or failure of the three conferences going forward into the rest of the 1940’s. Students judge how well the USSR came out of these negotiations and what they gained. An overview of the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan after Postdam with images of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Students consider how Stalin might react. An opportunity to analyse a historian’s opinion of Stalin’s next steps, then use the guided reading on the worksheet to complete the questions down the side about the impact of the use of the atomic bombs. This lesson contains: A starter to recap the winners and loser of WW1. An overview of the Paris Peace Conference and the Big Three, leading to a task to study the intentions of the Big Three with follow up questions. A study of the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles by putting them into 6 categories called ‘BLAMED’ - Blame, Land, Army, Money, Empire and Disputes. Students study the information sheet provided to fill this in. An extension PEE paragraph can be completed. A follow up exercise to study the changes to map after the Treaty. A run through of how to study interpretations and why they differ. There is an example of two images with two different things in it. Some in the class will see different things. An exercise for students to write down what happened last lesson, then the teacher can take different interpretations of the same lesson from different experiences. This helps illustrate the point. This lesson contains: A starter to excite the students about the number of states, current president and the flag. An overview of the exam paper and question types. A Cornell Notes activity to make notes as the on-board PPT goes through the backstory of the USA up until the start of the course in the 1830’s. This covers the 13 Colonies, Declaration of Independence, Louisiana Purchase, explorations of Louis and Clark and the move West. If you don’t want to use the Cornell Notes format, you could have them make a mind map, or split their page into 6 boxes. A brief introduction to the Plains (a central part of the course) and the geography of the U.S. A YouTube video from Ray Mears about the Plains and the dangers. This lesson contains: A background to early farming and the effect of the Indian Appropriations Act on settling Indians further West. An on-board summary of the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 and the parcelling up of land to be newly settled. The students can stick the map in an annotate around it. A brief introduction to these new farmers as Homesteaders. More comes in later lessons on them though. A guided reading/research task on the difficulties the farmers faced. Students use the information to complete the table for problems of farming the Plains and problems of living on the Plains. Students learn about the two sides and why they were fighting, then apply this to a consolidation gap fill which can be stuck in their books. A discussion of the railway project to connect East and West. There is a YouTube video and students write the reasons the railroad was built. A task to stick a map of the railroad into their books and annotate from the board the facts about each railroad company and the difficulties they faced on each side. This lesson contains: A starter about the Somme and to summarise the viewpoint of a person who was there are the time. A teacher-led overview of trenches, what they were and what they looked like. There is a consolidation discussion to decide what they can see going on in a typical trench and what questions they would ask. A comprehension gap fill task based on the knowledge they just gained about trenches. A task to watch a video about trenches and to label their own cross-section. They then use the information on the board to label the design of the trenches, including the front, support and reserve trenches etc. An opportunity to teach how to do the ‘follow up’ question and then to practice it.
