Learning objectives • Understand the concept of a life cycle • Introduce the importance of recycling In this lesson, taking inspiration from The Lion King’s: The Circle of Life, children discuss circles and cycles that they can see in the world, e.g. the lifecycle of a plant, day and night, the seasons, and consider the impact of when something breaks the circle. This activity shows children that we are all part of a Circle of Life, encouraging pupils to think about how we can protect our circle and make our world a better place.

Learning objectives • Understand anthropomorphism and its importance in literature and theatre • Understand an author’s craft (character, setting, mood) and describe in terms of anthropomorphism how animals are often represented by particular human qualities A lesson for KS3 and KS4 students, taking inspiration from Disney’s The Lion King, to introduce the concept of anthropomorphism and explore how writers develop animal characters and bring them to life. Students discuss how species of animals are usually given specific human qualities, and complete an activity sheet to aid discussion on the human qualities associated with different animals. The lesson can be a great starting point for exploring and discussing characterisation, narrative devices and figurative language in literature, as well as understanding the importance of anthropomorphism in the theatre.

The ‘Getting Ready to Roar’ documentary is a unique and inspiring insight into what it takes to bring Disney’s The Lion King to an audience of over two thousand people eight times a week! The specially commissioned 30 minute film gives students the chance to meet the talented, dedicated and inspirational team behind the scenes at London’s Lyceum Theatre. The accompanying lesson activities then help students develop an understanding of the employability skills that The Lion King team uses, and how these relate to their own experience and skill sets.
