Tes: Trusts in Education Expert Panel
The number of pupils requiring SEND support – and the number who have an EHCP – is at a record high, while at the same time AP and special schools are overwhelmed. How are trusts adapting to meet these needs and what plans do they have for future innovation?

Panel:
-
Simon Tanner, National Director of SEND, E-Act
-
Andrea George Samuels, Executive Principal for Send, Lift Schools
-
Nicole Dempsey, Director of Send and Safeguarding, Dixons Academies Trust
-
Lyndsey Holzer, CEO, Active Learning Trust
-
Elizabeth Rhodes, National Lead for Student Inclusion, Oasis Community Learning
At our recent event in Manchester we asked our panel to tell us about their recent SEND initiatives they have introduced across their trusts and the learnings from those.
The key themes were:
-
How inclusive practice needs to run through all aspects of school life, and should not be a bolt-on.

-
That behaviour, SEND, 51ºÚÁÏ and attendance are all interlinked and should be planned collaboratively.

-
To look at all children individually and recognise that a one-size fits all approach will limit success.

-
Draw on expertise of special schools.

The panel then spoke about ways they can proactively support children with SEND.
