This summary and sequence task card set is ideal for review, test prep, and continued practice of specific reading comprehension skills. Included are 20 reading task cards that focus primarily on SEQUENCE and SUMMARY. These task cards vary in reading levels and difficulty and can be used in 3rd–6th grades. Both fiction and nonfiction texts are included.
Each card contains a short passage, a mix of multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, and/or graphic organizers to fill in. Figurative language generates emotion, sets the tone and mood, and reflects subtle connotation nuances. These are crucial cues that assist readers in making inferences and comprehending the author’s purpose. Students should be aware of this type of language. This figurative language study provides an abundance of figurative language examples from the novel, Zane and the Hurricane, by Rodman Philbrick, that students can analyze.

How Do You Figure? - Figurative Language Practice Sheets: Students read short passages from the novel that contain figurative language. Then, underline the figurative language used, determine the meaning, and explain why the author included it.
Finding Figurative Language Charts: As students read the novel, they fill out the chart with examples of figurative language they come across while reading. Students should provide the quote from the text, page numbers, type of figurative language used, meaning, and why the author included it. The figurative language chart is not specific to this particular novel and can be used with any text.

*Note: There are several examples for each chapter. There may be more than you have time for students to complete. If this is the case, you can split up the examples and have students work on different examples, assign them as homework, use some as practice sheets and others as assessments, etc.

A Night Divided Novel Study STEAM Based Activities
Influenced by the novel, A Night Divided, the S.T.E.A.M.-based activities included in this product focus on the content areas of math, science, engineering, and art. Students will learn about historical events such as the Space Race, the Cold War, the Berlin Wall, and the work of artist Keith Haring, who used artistic expression to advocate for social justice. Both PDF and Google Slides (digital) versions included!
Collectively, as a class, the students will create a mural. Using the novel as a guide, students will analyze concepts such as theme, symbolism, elements of plot, character analysis, and more, then represent their understandings of these concepts through art.
In addition, students become engineers as they design a method to dig through mountains to create sturdy and leak-proof tunnels; learn about simple machines in order to design and build a transportation system that can carry a load of dirt and rocks; and design and build a structure that will hold weight without collapsing. Finally, after learning more about the Space Race and how rockets work, students will build and launch a rocket.

*** Vocabulary Study: This vocabulary study provides vocabulary activities and quizzes for words that appear in the novel.
*** Figurative Language Study: The figurative language study provides an abundance of figurative language examples from the novel that students can analyze. This resource includes figurative language posters (with definitions, why authors use them, examples, & non-examples) for simile, metaphor, personification, idiom, and hyperbole. Figurative language practice sheets are also included. Students read short passages from the novel that contain figurative language. Then, underline the figurative language used, determine the meaning, and explain why the author included it.
*** Theme Study: **This resource includes student handouts for four different themes from the novel. Each handout includes a brief description of the theme and explains how the theme connects to the novel. Questions are also included to help guide students in analyzing their theme.

S.T.E.A.M. Activities: The S.T.E.A.M.-based activities in this product concentrate on the subjects of math, science, engineering, and the arts. Students will discover the relationship between the Fibonacci series and fractal spirals as well as their existence in nature. Students will also plot fractal spirals, write a fictional story to describe a natural occurrence, and make an artistic cube with pictures of natural objects that follow the Fibonacci number sequence. Additionally, students will learn about artists who incorporate debris from natural disasters into their artwork and then use recycled or discarded materials to make their own masterpiece. Students will also conduct research on a chosen natural disaster’s effects and use art to communicate what they discover and its impact on people, the environment, and other living things. Furthermore, students will make connections between ideas like the golden ratio, fractal spirals, the Fibonacci number sequence, and Pi as they build a Pi skyline. They will design and build a mock levee, a hurricane-resistant building, and an anemometer to gauge wind speeds.
