It is also useful to use to practice SATS style questions for Year 2 working at greater depth and within. Also adaptable for year 3. The story is linked to materials, science and rockets, and sustainable environmental issues. It is very suitable for boys because of the dinosaur theme. It is also a good book to use if you are doing a fossils unit or learning about climate change. The questions are written like the Paper SATs method, where there is a short text and then questions to answer below. The other included resources for each week, support additional activities that you may consider doing as a carousel during your guided reading independent work. A character description in week 5 is included to support creative writing opportunities. Definitely a good book to move on reluctant or EAL readers . This is a Tes recommended 5 star resource. Thanks for choosing it.
Year 2 Maths - Measures ‘Capacity and Reading scales’
These are activities to assess children’s ability to read scales in ml and liters. Children should have first hand practical experience measuring into different size cylinders or bottles first to get secure understanding of when to use ml or liters. They should experience for example that four 250 ml containers fill a liter bottle. They can then move on to identifying the reading of scales in different jugs and solve problems.
These resources are differentiated for mastery and greater depth. There are opportunities to show reasoning and is suitably adapted to provide high expectations for the new maths curriculum.
Introducing cursive writing to years 1 and 2. By the end of the key stage children should be using a consistent legible cursive handwriting style to achieve greater depth. This resource is a good aid for classrooms to support teachers and pupils to remember the joins, and which letters to leave unjoined. The resource is useful for classroom and table top display. It can also be used to introduce all the joins correctly. In year 1 children should be reminded to form each letter correctly, with spacing and correct size. Year 2 should begin to join consistently.
Sorting and classifying seeds. Suitable for year 2 and above.
A fun and practical hands on lesson for children to handle different types of seeds, sorting and classifying them. Their is a high quality of differentiated resources available for children to record their results. Encourage children to choose and select the best or appropriate way of recording. The examples of recording sheets provided are a good scaffolding material, however, high ability children should be thinking of their own criteria.
Good example of classification keys given for sorting seeds for gifted and talented children. This lesson supports children to sort into different tables which makes goods links with maths curriculum also. Ideally you will have a range of seeds for children to sort. Easy and cheap seeds for you to get hold of (or you may have in kitchen) are as follows;
mung beans
broad beans
peas
kernel seeds (popcorn)
coriander seed
sunflower seeds
melon seeds
Suitable for the year 2 Plants new curriculum. This lesson has been used as evidence for the science quality mark.
Back to school and part of meet your new class activities.
This resource is an ‘Ice berg goal setting’ or Target setting activity for the new academic year.

There are examples given in the resources Powerpoint for writing and maths too. Teachers can amend according to their year group and even decide if pupils will choose a range of targets.

This is a fantastic way to include a dinosaur topic in your English unit. The resource contains an exemplar text (Instructions) with visuals aimed at the Exceeding in EYFS or Working at in year 1. The children are introduced to the story first - Harry and the bucket full of dinosaurs. It then leads on to learning instructional exemplar text (imitate) about 'How to take care of a pet dino.' This is supported by a text map to sequence and internalise language. The grammar features included are time connectives and prepositional language. The exemplar text is differentiated for SEN or EAL learners who may have little English, or limited writing ability. The unit lends itself well to imitation, innovation and invention. The children may go onto writing instructions for 'How to care for yourself ' or 'How to get ready in the morning.' They may write instructiins about caring for a class pet. There are lots of opportunities to do cross curricular and independent writing opportunities from this book e.g. my first day shopping. Excellent text for relluctant boy writers. ENJOY.
