A lesson using the poem ‘Still I Rise’ to teach Unseen Poetry. Differentiated tasks.

Lesson is differentiated using aim/challenge/super challenge and the GCSE mark scheme. Tasks and questions are differentiated throughout and there is a help sheet to support lower ability students with structuring their answer. Lesson uses the poems ‘Poppies’ and ‘Remains’ and students are asked to think about the key themes, similarities and differences and then eventually answer a differentiated exam style question (3 question choices.) A SPAG help sheet that I designed to put on the front or back cover of students’ books to help them with basic SPAG skills.

Aimed at a top set year 8 class- can easily be adapted for KS4 students. Includes a range of Gothic texts such as Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde, Dracula, Northanger Abbey. Teaches various language techniques such as pathetic fallacy, manichean symbolism, show don’t tell, foreshadowing etc. Lessons are planned using the TEEP format. Objectives and outcomes are designed to fit the GCSE criteria to prepare students for the style of the examinations. Differentiated using Aim, Challenge and Super Challenge tasks.

This lesson includes the context of the poem, annotations of the poem and language/structure/form analysis tasks. Differentiated using aim/challenge/super challenge and the GCSE mark scheme. Aimed at year 9-11 studying GCSE poetry.

Students are asked to find different ‘pieces’ of a gothic story (for example: characters, setting, curses, colours, lighting, weather etc) - these will be stuck around the room before the lesson begins. Once each group has found every piece, they then have 15 minutes to discuss and plan a gothic story using the elements they have collected. Then students will use these ideas to independently write up their own gothic story. Lesson is aimed at KS3 but can be adapted for older years. Lesson is planned using the TEEP model.
