Simplifying and collecting like terms

(0)
A series of at least 2-3 lessons (depending on class and length of lessons) on simplifying and collecting like terms. There are 4 worksheets and an animated powerpoint suggesting steps to use the worksheets. The powerpoint covers the whole lessons and has teacher notes and guidance for following each activity. The lessons fit nicely with a mastery curriculum due to the conceptual and procedural variation and also fit well into other SOW. These worksheets and slides are also available as part of a pack of planning for White Rose maths secondary scheme. Planning for White Rose Maths Secondary Autumn Term 1 Block 2 Week 3

This is a series of worksheets, activities and FREE lessons using the White Rose Maths Secondary Schemes (Year 7 Autumn Term 1 Block 2 Week 3 Algebraic Thinking - Understanding and using notation). This is week 2 of 3 from block 2. I have made lessons using the schemes with suggested activities. Where possible, I have suggested the use of manipulatives and have provided many opportunities for afl. Each slide on the teacher’s powerpoint gives suggestions of activities and suggestions on how to use the slide. You may decide to use the slides differently to how I have done or may decide to not use the powerpoint at all and just the activities. I have given some suggested answers and ideas how to scaffold learning. Teachers may decide to hide these slides for their own use only or they may decide to share these with their students. Key words have been highlighted throughout in blue and definitions are highlighted in purple. All worksheets and activities are also provided separately (as a ppt and/or pdf where possible) for ease of printing. I hope you find this useful, it has taken a lot of time to prepare! I hope to produce worksheets and activities for the rest of the year so keep a look out. I have included the powerpoint free of charge, it may not be available later in the year as my staff begin to prepare their own lessons. Let me know how it goes. Expanding and factorising

Expanding and factorising

(0)
A series of lessons on expanding and factorising single brackets and expanding and factorising quadratics. The lessons guide students through each step using intelligent practice and exposes them to all the eventualities they are likely to see when presented with these questions. For eg, when expanding single brackets, I have shown all the eventualities of having all positive terms in and outside the brackets, 1 negative, 2 negatives and all negatives. This can help students to develop a deep understanding of how a negative can affect the different parts of the answer and how it affects what is going on inside the brackets when factorising. It also eliminates questions like “there is a negative in front of the x, what do i do now”. This series of lessons fits well with a mastery curriculum as we can ask “what’s the same and what’s different, how will it affect our answer” as we go through the slides. I have added the powerpoint and worksheets to print out for the students.
