This resource on who the Picts were includes a lesson plan, Powerpoint presentation (customizable), and worksheets for drawing and handwriting practice. It’s aimed at Primary School Years 1-3, Key Stage 1, or Elementary grades (US), The PPT introduces the Picts through some background information and images of Pictish Stones. Students led through what a symbol is in order to understand the symbols on the stones. Worksheets include: 1 with 4 Pictish symbols to colour in; 1 x Pictish symbol with basic (3 words per sheet of 4 sheets) of handwriting practice. They have words like: claw, feather, beak, etc. All images used are the author’s own.

There are seven sources in total for students to evaluate, ranging from Pictish stones, to maps, and a video. A complete lesson plan for 4 days is included along with a description of the sources. There is a project rubric and student evaluation form. All copyright cleared. The photographs are the author’s own and other items are able to be used.

This is a ‘How to…’ guide for History and Geography teachers to creating a guided thematic data set. This one is set on a History data set and explains the types of evidence you could include for your students to analyze. The aim is for them to critically unpack the evidence and evaluate how that piece tells them about that particular event. Included is a student worksheet in both Word and PDF that you can adapt for your students to note the strengths and limitations of the sources presented. Once students are familiar with how a guided data set works, they should be able to create their own.

It would work in a revision class, or a stand alone class to get students to think conceptually. This resource pack links to The Guardian’s ‘Buried: how we choose to remember the transatlantic slave trade’ documentary which follows the construction of an airport on the island of Saint Helena. Whilst preparing for the airport and through roads, a mass grave was discovered of former enslaved Africans who passed away there on the Middle Passage of the transatlantic slave trade. The resources includes an Essential Question and guided questions for viewing, a Web Quest for Saint Helena, a worksheet on stakeholders in the documentary, and a worksheet for ideas on how people could be custodians of a collective history, together with a PowerPoint presentation.
