Mathematical Olympics - A Fully Planned, Differentiated Event For Primary Schools

(3)
A fun mathematical event that links the teamwork skills and effort involved in the Olympics with mathematical concepts found in the primary curriculum. Ideal for Key Stage 2 classes (ages 7-11), but adaptable to younger children by selecting only the ‘bronze’ level (see below). Fully resourced activities that only require a few resources that will be found in your school (e.g. plastic hoops, stopwatch, coloured cubes, etc). In small teams, children will tackle 8 fun, maths-based tasks to earn medals and score points for their team. Each task has three differentiated options: bronze, silver and gold. These are broadly aimed at KS1, lower KS2 and upper KS2, but are provided to give children the option of challenging themselves to earn more points for their team. At each of the eight tasks, one team member must be chosen to compete, with the team mates giving help verbally, but without touching or pointing to the task. The result is that every child has an important role and remains engaged throughout the whole event. The tasks are: · Sprint and Sort (including Venn diagrams and maths vocab) · Blind Build (communication and teamwork are vital here) · Problem Solving (logic puzzles) · Coordinate Treasure Hunt (reading grid references or (x,y) coordinate grids) · Mental Calculation Workout (mental addition and problem solving) · Tangram Timeout (a geometry based task) · Multiple Obstacles (an obstacle race with a times tables twist) · Code Breaker (place value knowledge will come in useful here) This event is suitable for either a single year group class or a mixed class. Just make sure the teams are well balanced and off you go! It has been designed for 32 children to take part at a time, although this can easily be adjusted by altering team sizes. Size of PDF: 69 pages. Please leave feedback - we love to hear from you!

KS2 Investigation - Year 5/6 - Area and Perimeter - Carpeting a House - Differentiated

(2)
A fully resourced lesson plan for children to apply their skills in calculating the area and perimeter in a real life situation. Children are presented with a floor plan of carefully proportioned rooms. Within the pack, you will find three differentiated tables for different abilities of children to complete. Each table includes a short list of rooms which are relevant to that ability group. Children calculate the area of carpet and the perimeter of skirting board their rooms require. Low ability - rectangular rooms Average ability - rectilinear rooms High ability - includes triangular areas and 'holes' in the shape This lesson was originally designed for a Year 5/6 class.
Table Splat! (Times Tables Game)

Table Splat! (Times Tables Game)

(22)
A game that can be played in pairs, threes or independently. Please note that this game focuses on times tables facts from 2 to 10 to ensure children are confident in these tables before progressing to the 11s and 12s, which will need to be taught subsequently. Children need a 'Table Splat' mat and counters (different coloured counters for each child). Children take turns to turn over a card, revealing a times tables question. The child who is the first to place their counter on the correct answer (whilst shouting 'SPLAT!') can leave their counter on the board. The winner is the player with the most counters on the board once all of the times table cards have been used. Differentiate by choosing the multiplication cards relevant for that child, depending on which times table they are currently working on. *Update: 6s and 9s have been underlined, to avoid confusion.* Save money when bought as part of a bundle. Three KS2 Investigations - Perimeter & Area - Tudor Theme - 3 Differentiated Maths Lessons

(1)
3 fully-prepared resources that are ready to go! Covers the 2014 National Curriculum's core aims - fluency, reasoning and problem solving. The lessons have been used to secure an outstanding grading in a lesson observation with a Year 5 class. 3 lesson plans for KS2, each including a starter, a differentiated main activity, a mini plenary, an extension activity and a plenary. All resources included within the pack, including a letter from Henry VIII and maps of Henry's gardens. Investigation approach used to ensure deep understanding of perimeter and area. The lessons currently centre around King Henry VIII's gardens to link to a Tudor topic, but they could easily be adapted to fit in with your topic by simply changing the main character from Henry VIII to another individual who might own a large amount of land. The three lessons focus on different parts of King Henry VIII’s gardens: • Lesson 1: The Knot Gardens (a perimeter investigation) • Lesson 2: The Rose Gardens (finding the area of rectangles and rectilinear shapes) • Lesson 3: The Stables (an investigation into the relationship between area and perimeter) My class loved this sequence of lessons. Please leave feedback - I'd love to hear how you get on with them!
