Animal Farm Lesson 1 - Creative Writing Intro

I use this lesson as an introduction to Animal Farm for KS3 or KS4 learners. I find it most suitable for KS3. It is linked to creative writing and is used before the students begin reading the book. It helps them think about the plot, themes and possible outcomes. The objective is to lead into them writing a creative piece based on Animal Farm before they start reading Wells’s wonderfully thought provoking allegory. It can also be used purely for creative writing without the book. The bank of adjectives table, an Excel document, is available for download in my other resource “Descriptive Writing - Lesson 1 - Creating a Bank of Adjectives” Please leave feedback if you found this lesson useful.

This is adapted from a GCSE grammar Workbook. I use it for post 16 GCSE re-sit learners. It is suitable for KS4, KS3 and Functional Skills Level 1. You can use it with the GCSE grammar workbook or on its own. I tend to use it on it’s own but some of my learners like the idea of a workbook so those learners are given the workbook and the lesson is turned into a gap fill activity. This lesson is for Entry 3 Functional Skills English, KS2, and depending on their knowledge level, KS3 learners. I use the lesson to introduce the imperative to my students by incorporating familiar things. The group had just finished reading Charlotte’s Webb by E.B White. Charlotte’s Webb is a fairly easy book to read and your students may be more advanced so you can adapt the lesson to suit your needs. Please leave feedback if you found it useful.

Descriptive Writing - Lesson 1 - Creating a Bank of Adjectives

This lesson has been mapped to AQA and Edexcel GCSE English 9-1 creative writing components. I use it as part of a series of 3 lessons that culminate in a written piece of work. This is Lesson 1. You can change the images to suit your students although my students love the images used here. I have found that the students, from KS3 onwards, enjoy this lesson and become quite competitive. It can also be used for post 16 GCSE students. It is a useful tool to help identify any learning needs (not SEN). Please leave feedback if you found the lesson useful.
