GCSE Music: Mini-Compositions

5 Resources
These are three mini-projects I do with my year 10s before launching the free composition. One features rhythm as a starting point, the second melody and the third timbre and texture. These are delivered after some basic music theory has been delivered.

A Level AOS4: Music for Theatre [Section C] (AQA)

This is all the teaching materials I use to teach Section C: Contextual Understanding of the A-Level exam. I focus on AOS4 for this portion of the exam specifically, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Stephen Sondheim. This resource comes with the analysis of three pieces of music by each composer: Sondheim: Ballad of Sweeney Todd and Worst Pies in London from Sweeney Todd and Giants in the Sky from Into the Woods. (Giants in the Sky is not annotated as this is something that I get students to do independently with guidance, the score is there though). Schönberg: One Day More and Master of the House from Les Miserables and I’d Give My Life for You from Miss Saigon. In addition to this analysis you will also get some example essays (one only focussed on Sondheim as this is what I focus on in year 12). The synopsis for the shows are also included.

GCSE: Introduction to Free Composition (Eduqas)

This is my free composition launch presentation and planning document. It goes through the requirements for composition, the criteria, an example of the log and ideas for getting started. I have also included the planning document, students plan their composition and then keep their plan with them updating it regularly as lessons progress.

Film Music (KS3)

This scheme of work is currently being taught to year 9 students although I have taught it with year 8 at a different school. The scheme of work aims to explore different genres of music including different musical devices before the main project which involves the sound being removed from four different clips (of each genre) and asking students in groups to come up with the music to accompany it. The embedded videos link to my private YouTube channel and are not able to be found without the link. Should the embedding not work, I have also attached links within the stars

Gamelan (Lesson One) KS3

I wrote this scheme of work for year 7 to explore texture, tempo, dynamics and rhythm through Gamelan. It was designed for a five week half term but can easily be extended.

KS3 Music: Musical Pathways (Composition/Performance Project)

I have created this scheme of work as a whole term scheme for year 9 students who have already completed their options. It gives them some flexibility and choice over the music that they engage with and requires the department to have keyboards and sibelius/cubase. Included in this is: a topic outline via a powerpoint (this is designed for minimal use during lesson as most of the time will be spent ‘doing’). Some free sheet music but also some sibelius (7) files and cubase files both composition starter materials and arrangements of pieces of music for students to then arrange.

GCSE: AOS1 The Coronation Anthems and Oratorios of Handel (AQA)

(3)
This is the powerpoint and worksheets I have used to teach my students about the Coronation Anthems and Oratorios of Handel. I also used this topic to teach them about the circle of fifths, modulations, structure, cadences, voices etc. There is therefore quite alot in addition to just the Handel stuff. There are listening examples either embedded or linked in the PowerPoint (in the star icons) and a listening test with answers for the end of the unit.

Graphic Notation Scheme of Work

I created this scheme of work as a way in to help year 7 students interpret written music before introducing written notation. The scheme of work includes as much practical activity as possible, as a whole class, in pairs and in small groups.

This is a bundle of all of the named artists for AOS2: Popular Music for AQA A-Level. It should take approx. 6-7 lessons to teach in full. Please note, I have only taught AOS2 for the section A portion of the exam so please be aware that there are no songs analysed in the detail required for section C.

Music Theory (Lesson One) KS3

I wrote this scheme of work for year 7 to introduce them to reading music in a fun way. Initially the students learn to read the treble and bass clef and learn to play a simplified version of Imagine by John Lennon. Later on in the project, students specialised in an instrument or voice and learnt to play ‘The Sky from Jigsaw Jam’ by Music for Youth. The culmination of the project was a whole year performance of the sky.

OCR GCSE Music: AOS5 End of Topic Assessment

GCSE Eduqas: Africa Assessment (AOS4 set work)

GCSE Eduqas: Africa Assessment (AOS4 set work)

(0)
This is the assessment that I have created based on the resources published by Eduqas. Unlike the actual exam, it features multiple sections to test the individual sections of the song so as to really gain a clear picture of their understanding. Because of this, I play them the whole song three times throughout the exam rather than the specific sections but you could easily do it this way if you wish. The test works through each section linearly and lasts around 45 minutes. PDF and word versions have been uploaded as have the answers.

KS3: Ground Bass/Hip-Hop (Distance Learning)

(1)
This is a 6-week project on Hip-Hop where the main focus is Ground Bass. I would normally teach Hip-Hop music on FL Studio, this is a project designed for distance learning and is a composition task to be completed on BandLab, which these students have not done before so it also includes a ‘how to’ for what they need to do. There is a quiz included and one main task, a submission on BandLab.

Arrangement of Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes. It’s a Sibelius 6 verison so that it’ll open on anything Sibelius 6 or later. It’s only the first two verses/choruses. It’s currently for voice, flute, two clarinets, cornet/trumpet, piano, bass and drums but can be easily rearranged for your needs.
