The Stono Rebellion and how enslaved Africans fought back.
As a bonus lesson there is also a review and a series of discussion points / activities on Reni Eddo-Lodgeâs âWhy I am no longer talking to white people about raceâ, a useful jumping off point for a discussion on how the legacy of slavery and racism still impacts our societies today.

An entry level guide to Business Studies by using the excellently accessible book âBee Fearlessâ by Mikaila Ulmer. Our school uses this as a summer project for our student to complete before they begin the Business course. Combined with reading the book this presentation acts as a worksheet, guiding students to reflect on what they are reading and to engage with several business key concepts. We find student that complete this task come in much more motivated and knowledgeable than those that do not.
This book came as a recommendation from the Business Teacher Book Club (Twitter @BusinessTeach11 â please join us).

A lesson designed to take students through the causes and events of the Falklands Conflict and end with a developed paragraph discussing the factors behind the British victory. There is enough content here to easily stretch across 2 (if not 3!) lessons. It has also been successfully taught to KS2 and 4 - but also to Sea Cadet groups across the UK.
It is a topic that is rarely taught in schools - but one that is fascinating and gets students engaged. A useful lesson for the end of term or as part of a wider study on Thatcherâs Britain and/or the Cold War.
Lesson sequence as follows:
Where is the Falklands? Guess the location.
Why was it invaded? â Quiz Quiz Trade
Thatcherâs response ï Reading comprehension
The task force ï Match up task
The taskforce ï How would you structure it?
The Belgrano ï Right or wrong?
The battle and landing events ï Relay.
Factors for success ï Diamond 9
Pick a factor and turn it into a PEEKA paragraph.

Black Lives Matter: Why I am No Longer Talking To White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge.
This lesson takes the key themes of the book âWhy I am No Longer Talking To White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodgeâ and attempts to distill them into a format ready for a class room discussion. Ideal for discussions on race during a tutor period or at the end of a unit of work that features discussion on race.
It is broken into the following stages:
Intro to the author and initial mind mapping.
A look at the history of black people, and their contribution, to British society.
A discussion of how these historic experiences have created systemic racism â this is the crucial element of the lesson, to explain to students that being âcolour blindâ can cause its own problems by neglecting to engage with the realities of black people.
What is âwhite privilegeâ and what could be done to stop it? A look at the NFLâs âRooney Ruleâ.
PEE paragraph on the Rooney Rule.
Ending thoughts and development of mind maps.
Extension task: Read Eddo-Lodgeâs article.
EAL Task: Keyword focus sheet
I do not for a second pretend to be an expert in these matters but this is my attempt to introduce the discussion of systemic racism into my classroom. I hope it can be of some use to you in your classrooms too.
