A lesson guiding students through how to response to AQA Paper 2 Question 5 using issues in modern football as a theme. It includes 3 exemplar AQA Paper 2 Question 5-style responses on 3 current issues in football: money, player burn out and modern-day tactics. Designed to appeal to KS4 students with a keen interest in football to help them develop the voice they need to answer this question. Perhaps it would be useful for an intervention group?

A 15 page booklet which selects four key quotations for each Power and Conflict poem and is accompanied by an image or symbol for dual coding. Students attempt to explain the significance of each quotation in the space provided. There is then a suggested answer booklet so students can check their answers.

I tried to cover 6 possible points that could be made to meet the assessment criteria. This results in a response that is over 1200 words. In truth, writing 3 of the 6 paragraphs should be more than sufficient in a timed exam.

Response B compares the named poem to England in 1819. Both contain 3 comparative paragraphs ending with a conclusion focusing on the authorial messages.

Two high level model responses to the June 2025 Paper 2 Question 5 AQA question where the topic was based wellbeing in schools. Response A primarily agrees with the statement. Response B primarily disagrees with the statement. I have put them side by side on a page so students can read them both and think about which argument is more compelling and convincing. Both are written with a similar structure that starts with an anecdote to hook the reader before zooming out to explore the wider societal issues regarding the purpose of education in the 21st century. The question itself is not included.

So AQA have finally changed question 3 to give students more help for the structure question. At the moment, we know the focus could be tension. Therefore I have written responses to 3 past papers (Rosabel, Mr Fisher, Hartop) as if they focused on how structure is used to create tension. The model answers are longer than required for the 8 marks but showcase the range of ways students can comment on structure to meet the assessment criteria for this question as they work chronologically through the extract to explore how the writer creates tension.
