This is my "Testing Ramps" experiment, which allows students to test different surface materials for a ramp: Legos, paper, and sandpaper. We did this experiment to determine what was the best material to use for a surface for cars in our model of our community we made.
Students will complete the first side of the activity together before the experiment, then do the experiment, and finally will write about their conclusions. The recording sheet follows the scientific method/process skills when conducting an experiment.
Step One: Make Guesses
Step Two: Determine if the test is fair
Step Three: Experiment
Step Four: Draw the experiment
Step Five: Discuss findings
Step Six: Suggest an alternative material for a surface
This is a fantastic product to introduce to your STEM students, or eager engineers. Similar to "Story Cubes", these are "STEM Cubes". Students roll all the cubes together, and position them to be face up after rolling. Students will determine which materials they can select, how much of each material, how much time they have to build, and can even be suggested a topic to build. Set these cubes out as an independent center, team building, group work, etc...
***PLEASE NOTE*** You must provide your students with the variety of materials featured on the dice in order for them to complete the task successfully. All materials are easily accessible no matter where you are.
This packet includes:
5 Materials dice (with varying materials)
1 Quantity dice (to declare how much of each material)
1 Minutes dice (to show how much time students have to build)
1 Design dice (with suggestions for students on what to build)
1 Blank Minutes dice (for teachers to choose their own timings)
1 Blank Quantity dice (for teachers to choose their own quantities)

This is a packet based around the GATE unit of "Thinking Like a Disciplinarian" designed for K-2 students and aligned with CCSS. Students step into the role of being a Marine Biologist and complete a research study on an ocean animal similar to the story "Over in the Ocean", with the main focus being animal conservation. Following the story students will select an ocean animal (great chance to get some stuffed ocean animals in the classroom) to learn about and work towards conserving.
Students can work independently, in small groups or partners depending on preference and ability. Once the research packet is complete, students will create a conservation poster to draw awareness to how we can help these animals.
This packet includes:
Cover Page
Lesson Outline
Teacher Notes
CCSS Page

This is a template I used for my Living and Non-Living unit. The students had to select one thing that was Living and one thing that was Non-Living, draw a picture of each, then write the name of the things they picked and the vocabulary word.
EX: The boy is living. The car is non-living.
Collect them and bind them for a class book. Or set it up as an independent activity in a science or literacy center with vocabulary words.
This is an excellent hands on measurement activity that gets students up and moving around the classroom, using a variety of non-standard tools for measuring. Students can complete this activity in 3 different ways, so perfect for differentiating in your classroom. Perfect for hitting the common core as well as meeting the needs of your diverse learners.
1. Students will select one tool and measure all the items with only that tool.
2. Students will have the freedom to look at the tools and decide per item which one they think would be best to measure with.
3. Students make a measurement book, and measure all the items with all of the tools.
***Please note, additional materials are needed to complete this activity***
Items to be measured: Apple, book, box, lunchbox, backpack, shoe, window, desk, door, chair, ball, and computer.
Measurement Tools: Teddy bear counters, paperclips, pencils, crayons, links, and unifix cubes.

Self-assess and monitor their progress with the Math
Common Core Standards.
*Students will get 9 pieces of food with the Common Core Standards listed in child friendly language with “I Can…” statements. Students will color the food as they master a standard, and paste it onto a paper plate. (Great to display in the classroom for self-monitoring their progress)

Math Meal, and will color and date each part of the
Math Meal as they master each standard. This is a great
way to document student progress for a portfolio, or data notebook.
* Teacher will get a recording graph sheet to document the progress of each student’s Math Meals.
