Students often find speaking quite challenging in German class. They find it really useful to engage with activities that require them to reproduce language they are already familiar with, be creative with that language in order to produce new language, and also enable them to engage with entirely new language. Each set features 100 conversation starters / speaking / writing prompts in question format, featuring a broad range of language and grammar points. The CEFR level across the two sets is roughly A2-B2, with some reference to C1. The sets feature a complete reference sheet, and a planning sheet. The activity works well as a spontaneous speaking activity, and students also benefit from a more focused approach, where they can research and plan more detailed and complex responses as their competence and skills develop. The questions works equally well as creative writing prompts.
The starters broadly address the following themes:
= Set 1: personal information : family & routines at home : hobbies & free time : likes & dislikes : local environment : food & drink; school & studies : sport & healthy living; countries & languages : weather & seasons
=Set 2: music : film & television literature & culture : personal life, information & preferences : leisure & free time : health & well-being : history & society : recent & current events : travel, tourism & holidays technology & social media : likes & dislikes local environment : environmental & social issues : education & studies

Students can embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of the focus target language, as well as develop their German language skills in general, independently of the teacher. The questions are differentiated, ranging in complexity and challenge. They have a shared language focus: fruits and vegetables in German, within the context of two German cases - nominative and accusative - and German articles, masculine, feminine, definite, indefinite, singular and plural, with some reference to adjectival endings.
There is reference to a range of grammatical structures such as um… zu + infinitive, all of which give students opportunity to recognise and identify linguistic patterns, and to develop their German skills more holistically, without explicit instruction. This enables them to understand and use language in practical and communicative contexts, which is a more successful language learning strategy, and more engaging and challenging for students, than straightforward single-unit vocabulary memorisation drills or exercises.
There are some simple translation questions, both German - English and English - German. This helps students understand that translation is not simply a ‘word for word’ exchange from the beginning of their German learning programme. To get the most from the questions, it’s useful to discuss responses to multiple-choice questions, discussing how and why a response is either correct or incorrect. Use prompt phrases such as Ich gehe auf den Mark, um… zu kaufen or In meinem Korb habe ich… for oral games in class time. These are a great way of encouraging students to talk in German class, as well as an additional strategy for practising and consolidating language.
Each set comprises the following non-editable files in a zipped format:
= 48 differentiated question cards. Laminating is definitely worth the extra prep time and expense, as the cards are more learner-friendly and remain in excellent condition for years, so you will get a lot of use out of them. Print and laminate pages of questions cards, rather than cut out individual laminated cards, as this is far less prep, and works just as well in class.
= answer key & answer recording sheet. The recording sheet works well for more formal assessment purposes. Students can use their class workbooks for working and noting their responses in class time.
= alphabetical German-English fruits / vegetables list. The lists include gender (masculine or feminine) as well as definite and indefinite article, singular and plural.

The posters create an instant and comprehensive introduction to Europe in German. The posters are portrait format, A4, 8.5 x 11, in German showing European countries, capital cities and flags. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the posters can help students develop their general knowledge and understanding of European geography.
There is a range of islands, such as the Faroe Islands, to extend students’ knowledge of Europe a little further, and also some countries, for example Armenia, that are often classed as belonging either to Europe or to Asia. Some countries have two posters, such as France, officially known as Französische Republik - you can choose either that, or the more frequently-used Frankreich to display.
The posters look great displayed horizontally across a particular learning area - alphabetically works well, though non-alphabetically is perfect for a country quest activity. They’re ideal for the annual Europe Day celebration, and the European Day of Languages, as well as an all year round display. Laminate if possible - it’s worth the extra prep time and expense, as they hang on the walls more easily, and remain in excellent condition for years.

Christmas provides a great learning opportunity in Italian class. Activities featuring Italian Christmas vocabulary provide a dual learning platform, where students can learn about Christmas in Italy, at the same time as revisiting and revising language they have already engaged with. Using Italian Christmas images and vocabulary enables students to engage with traditions and customs in Italian-speaking countries, comparing and contrasting them to other Christmas practices they know or follow. It’s a really useful way of stimulating discussion about Christmas in Italy and other Italian-speaking countries. I’ll be adding to the collection next Christmas, and you’ll be able to download the new resources as part of your original purchase.

Ideal for cross-curricular learning in Spanish class: students can develop their knowledge of the geography of Europe through classroom decor, really making the most of learning display. There are 134 portrait posters (A4, 8.5 x 11) in Spanish showing European countries, capital cities and flags, including some island communities such as the Faroe Islands and Guernsey. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the posters can help students develop their general knowledge and understanding of European geography. At the same time, they are developing their Spanish language skills: speaking, listening and reading in particular, as well as broadening their Spanish vocabulary.
We regularly ask questions during Talk Time, such as ***¿Cuál es la capital de…?***, or ¿Sà o no? Barcelona es la capital de España? - I’ve found this to be a really effective way of promoting speaking in Spanish class, as students tend to find this a really challenging skill, particularly at the beginning of their Spanish learning program.
There are several countries, for example Armenia, that are often classed as belonging either to Europe or to Asia. There are also two posters for some countries, such as France, officially known as República Francesa - you can choose either that, or the more frequently-used Francia to display.
Laminate the posters if you can - they display more effectively, and will remain in excellent condition for years, especially if you use them as flashcards to introduce Europe in Spanish class. There are two formats to choose from - Europe map, or plain without frame to keep prep costs to a minimum.
The Lively Learning Classroom offers a wide range of Spanish resources, including special offer bundles and freebies.

The verbs groups are:
= regular German verbs
= irregular & mixed German verbs
= high-frequency German verbs
= German reflexive verbs
= German separable verbs
There are 2 formats:
= Workbook Format: 10-page workbook, with cover page, verbs lists, six worksheets and Notes, Next Steps and New Verbs page, where students note any points they’d like to work more on, map their progress and list any new regular German verbs they learn, which helps them develop a really useful German verb bank.
= Worksheet Format: worksheets can be printed out individually, or as a pack without the cover page, verbs lists and progress template, useful for quick revision, refresher, starters / finishers, and also generally saves on prep costs
The answer keys are separate files in the individual zip files.
The worksheets also address a broad range of vocabulary and grammar points, such as direct / indirect object pronouns, negative sentences and various question formats. Some sentences include modal verbs and subordinating conjunctions, to ensure that students can practise locating the prefix, reflexive pronoun, verb or infinitive accurately. Students may not have engaged with all the language used at this stage, and this makes the activity equally about engaging with new language, as well as practicing and reinforcing the current language focus.
There are three differentiated conjugation challenges in each set:
= Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in sentence format across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding translation. Translating accurately is an important skill for language learners to engage with and master, and this kind of focused practice is really useful for them.
= Conjugation Challenge 2: straightforward conjugation drill: each question gives a German infinitive and a target pronoun. Students write the corresponding German verb conjugation.
= Conjugation Challenge 3: mirrors Challenge 1, with an increased challenge. Students write the German translation from an English sentence, to ensure that they are able to produce as well as recognise both the correct conjugation and an accurate translation.
