I was thinking of creating some junior material about Mary Seacole when I found National Geographic For Kids had already created this resource. See also notes on Kofoworota Abeni Pratt - first black Nigerian nurse in NHS

John Wycliffe was the first to translate, or inspire, the Bible being translated into English. He, with his associates, John Purvey and Nicholas Hereford, set about the task between 1381-1384. At the time it was regarded as heresy. The Roman Catholic church in the UK did not want it translated into the common vernacular so that the general public could read it - it would have meant the church losing some of its power and influence. John Wycliffe escaped being burnt at the stake during his life time but in 1428 his body was disinterred and burned. Whilst browsing in TKMax I came across three excellent books about the Medieval England. Certain pages open up to give you a 4 page display. I have included the index and a picture of a knight. A number of years ago, whilst teaching in a Middle school, I created some work sheets -list shown - see Medieval England.

I found this wonderful page depicting Autumn by Mari Friend in a book called *Winter Survival. The picture encouraged me to sort out my Vocabularies on Poetry Aids on Autumn. There is a new Autumn sports vocabulary. I have also created an easier Poetry Aid .

Saint Alban was the first British Christian martyr. He lived in Verulamium, today that is Saint Albans In Hertfordshire. He took a Christian priest into his home. The priest converted him to Christianity in the short time he stayed with him. St. Alban, a Roman soldier, then disguised himself as the priest, so the priest could escape. St. Alban was beheaded for his new beliefs. The stories of St. Alban are a mixture of fact and legend. St. Alban is a saint of the undivided church, a saint for all Christians. His welcome to a persecuted stranger was a powerful example of courage, compassion and hospitality. Germanus, bishop of Autissiodorum, played an important part in the establishment and promotion of the Cult of Saint Alban. I have created four sheets which children may like to use during their summer holiday. The first sheet is a Diary idea with lots of Vocabulary and useful phrases. The second sheet is a Poetry Aid which the children may like to use to try and describe the holiday in poetic form. Sheet 3 Seaside Sheet 4 Sea and Seashore They will also be useful at the beginning of the summer term.

William Tyndale is often forgotten about unfortunately. It was William who was responsible for the translation of the Bible into every day English. He used Greek to translate the New Testament; he used Hebrew to translate the Old Testament. He lived at the time of the Reformation. The Roman Catholic Church did not want their Latin version of the Bible translated into English. He wanted everyone to be able to read it vernacular English. He died at the stake accused of being a heretic. A few years later his translations formed the basis for our present Bible. John Wycliffe translated the Bible into English from Latin

Children in year 6 are often asked to write something for their final assembly. I have created two sheets. Sheet one should give them ideas about what to write. Sheet 2 may read Poetry Aid but the vast vocabulary can also be used to help them write their memory sheet. Hope these two sheets will inspire the children to write either a piece of prose or to have a go at writing a poem.

The name of Swithun is best known today for a British weather lore proverb, which says that it rains on St. Swithun’s day, 15th July, it will rain for forty days. Saint Swithun ,c800 - C861/3 AD, was buried outside the Cathedral. It was his wish that men might walk over his grave and raindrops from the eaves drop upon it. Over a hundred years later they decided to place his remains inside a new basilica in Winchester Cathedral. The day they tried to transfer his body into a new basilica was 15th July 971. It rained and according to the proverb it did for the next forty days. His remains were eventually placed in the new basilica inside.

Just put this material together to help children write /discuss what happened in Thailand in the last fortnight. Lets hope the rescue is a complete success.

I have created four sheets about cricket. One is a phrase sheet to encourage children to write about their experiences about playing or watching cricket The second is a Poetry Aid sheet in case they would like to put their thoughts in poetry form. The third sheet is a cricket word search with answer sheet. There is a sheet of cricket equipment and field positions List of basic vocabulary There are 4 sheets showing a simple sentence with their meaning of many of the words used in cricket

Clock Cricket is played by a group of 8 children. Only one wicket is used with a stump at the bowler’s end. The children are set up in a ‘circle’ - the ‘circle’ can either go clockwise or anti-clockwise. There are always two children batting - when one is OUT they change ends. They are only in for 6+ balls . Once the 6+ alls have been bowled it is one move to the right. This keeps everyone interested and busy. To make it more interesting an individual score sheet could be created. Everyone is kept busy. A class can be divided into maybe 4/5 groups and each group have their own game.

I recently started to read in a theological book that there was a lot of significance in the fact that the Gospel of St. John has only seven signs or miracles. I have printed out, in full, the seven signs/miracles, so the pupils can study them in detail. The significance can be read about on Google. I have used the Message Bible for the passages I have copied.

The River is a place to be enjoyed but it is can also be dangerous. The main clip art picture shows the journey of a river from the source to the sea - labels can be added. There are two vocabularies and three Poetry Aids (two in bold type). There are two clip art pictures for best copy and a short crossword and word search - answers provided. Some information which might encourage children to write a story about going on a canoe trip. 10 reasons for taking up canoeing Canoe Equipment Canoeing on the River 1 can used like a comic strip. Canoeing 2 and Kayaking a dangerous river are vocabulary sheets. Children of different abilities should be able to use these sheets.( Illustrations by David Woodroffe). Earthquakes are one of the most destructive natural disasters in the world. The first sheet emphasizes the link between Earthquakes, Tsunami and Volcanoes. The second sheet require the pupil to draw pictures to show slight destruction to ruins. The third sheet gives suggestions for putting the story together, the forth sheet is a vocabulary sheet. Home at last is my attempt at a story. There is also a poetry aid. Finally there is a simple crossword and word search - answers supplied. Added general sheet on Rescue.
