What’s it for?
This activity set has been designed to practise and reinforce all of Phase 2 sounds. Learners sound out simple words, all only using sounds within Phase 2).
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for Early Years children who are just learning these sounds for the first time, pupils in Year 1 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds. This resource is also ideal for older learners who need to revisit these sounds.
How to use it?
Print resources onto card rather than paper, cut following dotted lines and place the ‘word cards’ on a table top with the last section folded backwards (where the ‘dashed lines’ indicate) to ‘hide’ the image behind the word. Learners sound out and read each word, then check by looking at the ‘hidden’ image (folded back) to see if they read the word correctly. With the end section folded back these cards can also ‘stand up’ on a table top rather than being laid flat, inviting learners to explore them and giving the activity an interactive feel.

Images for ‘x’ do NOT ‘begin’ with ‘x’ ! I have researched words beginning with ‘x’ and none have a clear initial ‘x’ sound, therefore for all ‘x’ images the ‘x’ sound is at the END of these words. X is the ONLY letter where the sound is at the end.

This resource is to enable learners to practise identifying the first (initial) sound (phoneme) of objects (images) and match these with the correct, matching letter (grapheme).

This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support, revisiting any/all of these sounds.
How to use it?
An adult prints each sheet out (ideally onto card) and cuts along the dotted lines, including to separate the ‘letters’ from the ‘images’ (instructions are included on each sheet itself). These pieces (images and letters) can then be placed on a table top for learners to match - the image with the matching/correct letter sound as a two part mini jigsaw puzzle. Each letter only fits the images which have the matching letter sound.
I have grouped the letters of the alphabet together. This sheet is part of the ‘Blue Set’ and designed to be used with letters j, v, w, x, y, z. Exploring this set together gives learners the opportunity to become more familiar with these letters by looking at them more closely. Other sets in this same design are available.
This is a fun and engaging way to practise recognising these letters and identifying the correct initial letter (phonics) sound for ten (or five) images (per letter).

This resource is to enable learners to practise identifying the first (initial) sound (phoneme) of objects (images) and match these with the correct, matching letter (grapheme).

This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support, revisiting any/all of these sounds.
How to use it?
An adult prints each sheet out (ideally onto card) and cuts along the dotted lines, including to separate the ‘letters’ from the ‘images’ (instructions are included on each sheet itself). These pieces (images and letters) can then be placed on a table top for learners to match - the image with the matching/correct initial letter sound as a two part mini jigsaw puzzle. Each letter only fits the images which have the same initial letter.
This is a fun and engaging way to practise recognising these letters and identifying the correct initial letter (phonics) sound for ten images (per letter).

What’s it for?
This set focuses on tricky words, all ‘nouns’ with a matching image. This activity has been designed for learners to look more closely at some of the first 200 high frequency words and attempt to read these words. Although these words are not intended to be ‘sounded out’ as it is difficult to do so - if learners focus on the black letters (red letters indicate sounds are tricky) they can use their phonics knowledge to ‘work out’ the black letter sounds and (along with looking at the images) attempt to read the words.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for pupils in Year 1 who are learning these sounds (and words) for the first time, pupils in Y2 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds/words. This resource could support pupils with EAL (English as an Additional Language) and older learners with additional learning needs.
How to use it?
Adults pre-cut along dotted lines and shuffle the set of x17 words (and images) then place cards face-up on the carpet/a table top for learners to read and match.

Words have been organised depending on which phonics phase they fit in with. This coded system is made clear by a ‘key’ displayed top, right on every page of the resource.
underlined indicates that together underlined letters have one sound, for example ‘sh’ in ‘shoe’
red letters indicate the tricky/irregular letters, e.g. ‘gi’ in ‘giant’ or letters which may be pronounced differently e.g. the ‘er’ in ‘water’ is often pronounced as ‘uh’ or ‘a’.
the small white cross (top-left of each image box) indicates that these words are not intended to be sounded out, though (as said) if learners focus on the black letters in these words, along with the pictures, they may be able to identify words to read/match them.

This resource focuses on practising handwriting the tricky words which are part of phonics phases 2, 3, 4 and 5 and key vocabularly (reading and spelling) which are essential to know.

This activity has been designed to write straight on. Each letter has a clear ‘starting dot’ so learners know where to place their pencil to begin. The words have each been repeated three times (in three columns) left to right.
There are clear, visual, instructions at the top of the sheet, in three parts (left to right). In the centre (at the top) the colour order to follow is clearly illustrated, guiding learners to begin with dark green, follow light green, pale yellow, mid yellow, orange and then red to ‘stop’. Not all letters have enough steps to follow through using all of these colours.
This resource has been designed for learners to write one word at a time, gradually reducing the level of support provided (left to right). E.g. learners begin with the word on the left (in the first column) and once they have written this they move onto the same word, to the right (in the centre/column two). Lastly learners write the same word a third time on the right (column three).
The first word (column one) has a green (‘go’) starting dot, coloured arrows around the outside of each letter to show the direction to move the pencil from the beginning to the end red (‘stop’) dot.
The second word (column two) also includes a green starting (‘go’) dot and red (‘stop’) dot as well as one arrow per letter making clear the initial direction the pencil should move in.
The third word (column three) includes a dark grey starting dot and light grey stop dot for each letter. Learners will need to use the knowledge they have learnt from writing each word twice before to complete writing ‘word three’ more independently.
At the base of some sheets (Phases 2, 3 and 5) there is a space to further practise writing each of these words several times and smaller (each positioned on a line). The words at the base of the sheet only have a grey starting dot to help learners.
There is a clear space at the lowest edge of both sheets for learners to write their name and at the top of the sheets (right side) a space for the number date - helpful to keep track of progress.

Using cards with a Function Machine
Learners sound out the graphemes on one side of each card to read each word then push the card into the top function machine slot (word side facing up) and can see if they are correct when the picture pops out of the slot below (picture side up!)
Using cards without a Function Machine
Learners sound out the graphemes on one side of each card to read each word then flip it over to see if they were correct - looking at the picture on the other side.
What is needed to make these?
x10 sheets of white A4 card (for the printer)

scoring tool (to help fold the card accurately)

How to use it?
An adult needs to print the sheets onto card and follow the instructions (included on every sheet) to make these cards double-sided/back-to-back.
All/a set/s of back-to-back cards can then be placed on a carpet/table top, for learners to use on their own/with adult support.
Phoneme ‘dots’ have been included under every grapheme so that learners know how many sounds to say as they read (sound out) the words.
