x17 sheets for all Phase 2 sounds, pdf format.
What’s it for?
This resource encourages learners to identify the initial sound of pictures, match these with the grapheme (letter) and place both (picture and letter) cards together onto ‘word boards’ where they can sound out the words. Phoneme dots make clear how many sounds there are in each word.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for Early Years children who are learning Phase 2 sounds for the first time, pupils in Year 1 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds. This resource is also ideal for older learners with additional learning needs who need to revisit these sounds.
How to use it?
This activity set has been designed to practise and reinforce all of Phase 2 sounds. Learners match images with the corresponding sound (grapheme), then place these on the correct ‘word board’ to sound the whole word out.
Print resources onto card (rather than paper), cut following dotted lines.
Resource Details

What’s included?
This pdf download includes x3 landscape orientation sheets featuring x7 colour ‘splats’ with colour name labels with clear step by step instructions to create colourful acetate/cellophane colours for (window) display.
What’s it for?
These colours have been designed to install and sense of awe and wonder - the coloured shapes look beautiful when the sun shines through them and where the colour ‘falls’ depends on the position of the colours in relation to the sun which changes as the sun’s position changes. The set gives an opportunity to showcase the whole set of colours together as a focus to encourage learners to recognise and name each colour. The colours can of course be repositioned and displayed as you choose. A ‘Colours!’ label (to be displayed with the set of shapes) is included.
This resource would also support work on shadows and light/dark.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students who would appreciate a pop of colour shining through when the sun comes out!
Resource Details
There are x3 pages. The first page includes clear instructions with two colours, the second page includes remaining colours in the set and the last page the ‘Colours!’ word label.
The colours featured in this resource are:
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink and purple.
Suggestions
We recommend printing and making these letters out of white card - paper would be too flimsy and see-through so not effective. A set of coloured acetate/cellophane sheets is needed to make these - these are quite inexpensive online.
We also recommend also backing every colour in white card so that the coloured acetate/cellophane is concealed - this looks so much nicer on the window and makes each letter stronger however is twice the work and time and to do this x6 sheets of A4 white card will be needed (instead of x3 sheets).

What’s included?
This download includes two A4, landscape pdf sheets, one with ‘circular’ shaped (paper/card) beads, the other with ‘square’ shaped (paper/card) beads.
What’s it for?
This resource has been designed to practise ‘ordering the alphabet’ as well as matching upper and lowercase alphabet letters together. Whilst working on this activity learners will develop their fine motor control as well as improve their familiarity of these letters. Learners will need to decide between upper and lowercase letters as they select letters to thread as well as consider which letter/s come next.
This is an ideal activity to keep learners busy and independent.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children and pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
Resource Details
The layout includes x6 rows and x9 columns of circular/square shaped beads each with an upper and lowercase letter. Beads are arranged in rainbow order to help guide and motivate learners in finding the next number (and colour) in the pattern.
Dotted guide line showing where to cut and punch a hole are included. The hole to punch is 5mm in size though a smaller hole punch could be used (to increase the fine motor skills challenge!)
Two versions of the letter ‘k’ are included as some learners may be more used to the look of one ‘font style’ than the other.
Learners will need a piece of string/ribbon/pipecleaner to thread their paper/card beads onto.
Suggestions
We recommend that these beads are printed onto card to improve their durability whilst learners are busy sorting through the different letter beads and threading them.
We feel that although the circular beads look equally lovely, the square beads are much easier and quicker to prepare, requiring only straight cuts to separate them.
Learners who might find ordering the letters of the alphabet challenging may benefit from having a upper and/or lowercase alphabet in front of them to use as a reference and support them.

What is it?
This download includes x3 sheets (portrait orientation) featuring x27 left-hand/finger ‘pointers’ in rainbow/skin tone colours both as solid colours and outline only.
What’s it for?
These are for learners to hold and use to ‘point’ to their learning. These pointers were designed to help develop one-to-one correspondence when reading but could be just as helpful for a variety of activities, such as ordering the alphabet, counting objects etc. These resources are ideal to use alongside our ‘ants on apples’ set of rhymes - also available.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as students needing additional learning support. If you use a ‘pointer’ you can guarantee they would like to use one too!
How to make it?
Print onto white card, follow dotted lines to cut out each hand/pointer shape, attach a wooden lolly stick to the back with sticky tape and they’re ready to use! We recommend keeping a (rainbow coloured!) set in a little pot in the reading area for learners to help themselves to. Colour choice can be very important and it can be especially motivating to be able to choose/use your favourite colour. You may wish for learners to have their own pointer, maybe matching their skin tone or in their favourite colour. Learners could write their name on the back of their own pointers for safekeeping.

What’s included?
x4 sheet, all portrait orientation, pdf format.
What’s it for?
These resources have been designed to be used at the end of learning Phase 2 (once all the sounds have been introduced) to check learners knowledge. There are two sheets of the same design with a variation of the challenge provided, enabling you to choose the right level of support for your learners.
Who’s it for?
These resources have been designed to be used at the end of Phase 2 by Reception/Year 1 pupils - primarily for assessment purposes. This resource is also ideal for supporting older pupils with additional learning needs.
How to use it
Learners sound out a word (looking at a picture) and write graphemes within each word on the lines provided.
The resources included are at two levels, the icon at the lower right side indicates the level of challenge as higher/lower.
At the top of both sheets a ‘colour key’ is included - recapping on the Phase 2 sounds and order these are taught. Red sounds are introduced first s a t p i n (so should be most familiar), orange sounds are next m d g o c k, followed by yellow ck e b r u h then green f ff l ll ss which are the last of the Phase 2 sounds.
Both resources are provided with and without the (colour coded) Phase 2 sounds at the top at the sheet.
All images included within both resources can be sounded out only using sounds within Phase 2.
Resource 1
The less challenging sheet (providing more support) focuses on CVC words and under the lines (to write on) includes ‘sound dots’. These are colour-coded supporting learners as to which colour group that sound is from as well as making clear how many sounds are in each word. This sheet also has one CCVC (frog) and one CVCVC (lemon) word at the end.
Words are:
ant
tap
pan
map
cat
mat
kit (like ‘PE’ or ‘football’ kit)
rat
bag
bat
frog
lemon (the ‘o’ is ‘red’ as some may pronounce this sound as ‘u’)
Resource 2
The more challenging sheet (providing less support) includes words with more sounds/using sounds which may be trickier to remember, e.g. ‘ff’, ‘ll’, ‘ss’.
Words are:
stamp
ink
nest
dog
gift (not to be confused with ‘present’!)
duck
octagon (learners need to know this 2D shape! In addition the ‘a’ is ‘red’ as some may pronounce this sound as ‘u’, learners may need help with this)
up
bell
hen (not to be confused with ‘chicken’!)
daffodil (learners will need to know the name of this flower or may write ‘flower’ instead. In addition the ‘o’ is ‘red’ as some may pronounce this sound as ‘u’ or ‘a’)
grass
Suggestion
These sheets could be laminated and used as a table top activity for learners to access independently using a wipe clean pen.

What’s included?
This download includes nine A4, portrait pdf sheets which make a number matching set featuring x54 cards which includes all letters of the alphabet with an image to match.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
What’s it for?
This resource is to practise identifying the initial sounds for x26 images and matching these to the written letter/sound (grapheme). Both upper and lowercase letters are including - helping to reinforce both.
How to use this resource
This matching activity has been designed to be an activity for an individual or group where the square (cards) are already cut up (and hole punched!), shuffled and displayed either loosely on a table top/carpet or already attached on a ring. Learners look at each picture card and (if they are able) say what it is. Learners then say the initial sound for each picture and match the ‘picture’ card to the alphabet ‘letter’ card which shows the same initial sound. Once the set is matched into pairs (picture and letter cards together) learners can then order the card pairs from the beginning to the end of the alphabet or in reverse which can be much trickier!
Pictures included are apple, banana, car, dog (Dachshund!), egg, frog, grass, house, ink, jam, key, lemon, milk, nine numbers, orange, pink pig, quarter, robot, sun, tree, upside-down umbrella, van, wall (not to be confused with ‘bricks’ !) xylophone, yellow yoyo, zebra.
This alphabet matching set could be used as a reference resource for learners e.g. to cross-check the correct orientation of individual letters if unsure when writing.
Games
This ‘Alphabet Match’ set could also be used for a variety of games and to accompany and involve learners during rhymes and songs, usable both inside the classroom and outdoors (especially if laminated to improve durability in all types of weather!) Hide and seek match could make a fun game where one half of the set (e.g. all the picture cards or all the letter cards) are missing and learners need to find them and match them up.
Suggestion
Brightly coloured plastic keyrings (which can be easily opened by unclipping the plastic) as seen on the main resource image are ideal for this resource and can be purchased online easily. Alternatively string or thin ribbon would work well. If a small amount of velcro was attached to both ends of string/ribbon with some strong glue this would help learners to be more independent using this resource.

What’s included?
This download includes x1 sheet, landscape orientation, pdf format to read/sound out high frequency words (nouns). This set of words has been grouped as words that can be sounded out from phonics Phases 3, 5 and 6+.
What’s it for?
This activity has been designed to give learners an opportunity to look more closely at a selection of the first 200 high frequency words and practise reading these words by sounding them out. All words have been sorted into colour groups depending on which phonics phase they fit in with so words can be introduced at the right time for your learners. This set of words is ‘nouns’ - all words fit in with phonics Phases 3, 5 and 6+.
This is a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for individuals/groups to be getting on with independently, during ‘busy/quiet times’ or those needing some individual 1:1 support.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for pupils in Year 1 who are learning these sounds (and words) for the first time, pupils in Y2 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds/words. This resource is also suitable for older learners with additional learning needs.
How to use it?
Learners cut out words (following dotted lines) at the base of the sheet, sound out the graphemes to read the word, then match the word with the image - placing word cards in the boxes underneath the images. Word cards are to be secured with glue once learners are happy they have matched the words with the images.
Tip!
To avoid words getting lost/in a muddle, encourage learners to only cut out one word at a time, read and match it to the picture and once it has been secured to the sheet with glue, move on to cutting out the next word.
Resource Details…
These words are all from the list of ‘first 200 high frequency words’ to read and spell. It is possible to ‘sound out’ these words.
Where individual letters are underlined - this indicates that together these (underlined) letters have one sound, e.g. ‘ow’ in ‘town’. This is also indicated on the ‘key’ included on the sheet itself (right side). Any ‘tricky’/‘irregular’ letters are identified in red, such as ‘e’ in ‘garden’ which can be pronounced as an ‘uh’ sound.
Purple indicates that these words are from Phase 3, turquoise indicates that the words are from 'phase 5’ and grey indicates that the words are from phase 6+. The ‘title’ (top, left of the sheet) can be used as a visual reference to keep this colour coded system clearly in mind.

Learners can focus on the black letters (red letters indicate where the words are tricky) and use their phonics knowledge (as well as the images provided) to ‘work out’ these words (all nouns).
‘ey’ in ‘money’. Tricky / ‘irregular’ letters are identified in red, such as ‘a’ in ‘ball’.

What’s it for?
These x4 resource sets are a selection of the first 200 high frequency words to look more closely at nouns. Learners can sound out nouns and become more familiar with seeing/reading them on sight. Learners also match the nouns with the corresponding pictures. All words have been sorted into colour groups depending on which phonics phase they fit in with so words can be introduced at the right time for your learners.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for pupils in Year 1 who are learning these sounds (and words) for the first time, pupils in Y2 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds/words. This resource is ideal for pupils with EAL (English as an Additional Language) and suitable for older learners with additional learning needs.
How to use it?
Learners follow dotted lines to cut out words at the base of the sheet and sound out graphemes to read the nouns. Learners then match noun words with the pictures - positioning the words in the boxes underneath the pictures. Words are to be secured with glue once learners are happy they have matched each noun and picture correctly.
Top tip!
To avoid words getting lost encourage learners to only cut out one word at a time. Once learners have secured each word to the sheet (with glue!) they can move on to cutting out the next word.

This download includes x4 sheets, all portrait orientation, pdf format.
What’s it for?
This set focuses on tricky words, all ‘nouns’ with a matching image. This activity has been designed for learners to look more closely at some of the first 200 high frequency words and attempt to read these words. Although these words are not intended to be ‘sounded out’ as it is difficult to do so - if learners focus on the black letters (red letters indicate sounds are tricky) they can use their phonics knowledge to ‘work out’ the black letter sounds and (along with looking at the images) attempt to read the words.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for pupils in Year 1 who are learning these sounds (and words) for the first time, pupils in Y2 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds/words. What’s included?
This download includes x2 landscape orientation, pdf format sheets, to sound out/read number names from one to twenty.
What’s it for?
These resources look more closely at number names from one to twenty. Learners can sound out number name words and become more familiar with seeing/reading them on sight. Learners also match the number name words with the corresponding numerals.
This is a simple, predictable activity designed to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for individuals/groups to be getting on with independently, during ‘busy/quiet times’ or those learners needing some individual 1:1 support.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for Early Years children/pupils in Year 1 who are learning phonics sounds and these number name words for the first time, pupils in Year 2 who need some practise to read and spell these words. This activity is also suitable for older learners who need to recognise, read and spell number names from one to twenty.
How to use it?
Learners follow dotted lines to cut out words at the base of the sheet and sound out graphemes to read the number name words. Learners then match number name words with the numerals - positioning the words in the boxes underneath the numerals. Secure words with glue once matched correctly.
Tip!
To avoid words getting lost encourage learners to only cut out one word at a time.
Resource Details
Number names from one to twenty have been split into two groups - one set can be sounded out, the other words are tricky.
Set One
This set includes x15 number names which can be sounded out.
Set Two
This set includes a repeat of x5 number names which can be sounded out (from phases 5) as well as x5 ‘tricky’ number names which can’t be sounded out.

What’s included?
This download includes x3 A4, portrait pdf sheets.
What’s it for?
This resource has been designed for learners to make their own (non fiction) ‘mini book’ to share in writing and drawing some simple information that is ‘all about me’ to help learners and new teachers to get to know each other at the start of a new school year.
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support.
Resource Details
Page 1
This page has been designed to be the ‘book’ itself. The top section is the front and back cover, the middle and lower section have been designed as the pages to go inside the book. Learners are to cut along ‘dotted’ lines on page 1 to create three separate strips - these are the ‘pages’ of the book. Learners then stack these three pages together - with the ‘All about me!’ cover positioned at the front and fold along the ‘dashed’ lines. Learners can write their name on the line provided on the front cover before continuing with making their mini-book.
Next step - learners stick information (see pages 2 and 3) on front AND back of these pages to add more information to their ‘all about me’ mini-book.
Learners will each need a pencil, scissors and a glue stick. Adults may wish to ‘staple’ the spine of these mini-books together (along the ‘dashed lines’) once complete.
Pages 2 and 3.
These pages have been designed to be cut out as individual squares and completed by learners before being stuck into the prepared mini-book. Learners can choose which ‘squares/pages’ to include in their mini book - there are several to choose from…
Information for learners to complete includes…
drawing a picture of themselves
writing the number for how old they are, drawing the correct number of candles onto a birthday cake to show this and recording in writing when their birthday is
writing or drawing and labelling something that they did during the summer holidays
colouring and writing the name of their favourite colour
drawing and labelling their favourite food (on a plate)
writing or drawing and labelling their favourite ‘thing to do’
circling a sentence to indicate whether they have a pet/s (or not)
writing the type of creature their pet is/pets are and their pets name/s
circling a sentence to indicate whether they like school (or not)
writing or drawing and labelling something they like about/to do at school
writing or drawing and labelling something they do not like about/to do at school
