Sixth form brings many new experiences, including turning 17 and learning to drive. This presentation underlines the dangers for young drivers, highlights particular risky behaviours and reminds about legal responsibilities. There are opportunities for discussion, links to further reading and to optional videos. It would work as a stand-alone session, but would also support revisiting content from a presentation from an emergency service. It is supported by a preliminary quiz on Forms to ascertain student perceptions of themselves as drivers and of gauging risk and a plenary quiz to check impact. Both are accessed via links to duplicate in the Teaching Notes.

This presentation is designed to coincide with Global Entrepreneurship Week, but could also be used as part of your careers programme and could be an ideal precursor to welcoming a talk from a local entrepreneur. It involves students researching a chosen entrepreneur, so they will require access to the internet. The teaching notes include a link to a preliminary quiz and there are printable worksheets to support discussion and research activities. As Remembrance Day approaches in November, this is a lesson to reflect on the origins of the day, to consider how it is commemorated and why and to think about the significance of the red poppy, purple poppy and white poppy. This lesson is inspired by the Movember movement, but deals with men’s health issues which warrant discussion at any point in the calendar, i.e. prostate and testicular cancer, mental health issues and suicide prevention. This lesson is designed for Transgender Awareness Week and looks at its purpose, issues surrounding transgender and the importance of advocacy and support. A resource for International Mother Language Day (could also be adapted for European Day of Languages in September). This lesson could be used on September 5 for International Day of Charity, but could also be used as part of you careers or PSHE or Life Skills programme to promote the value of volunteering from the point of view, not just of altruism, but also of building skills towards employment and future applications. In the fast paced world qualities such as kindness can be overlooked, but research indicates that showing and receiving kindness support a lift in mood, making us feel happier and reducing anxiety. This presentation looks at the research and the benefits of being kind, what you can do, what the obstacles may be and the positive impact of volunteering. It includes links to videos, with timings so you can ascertain if they fit with your timing schedule. There are also optional discussion points and links to further reading and sources. Students will be thinking about going off to uni/apprenticeships and this presentation discusses big and little issues they may encounter and how to deal with them. It approaches the idea of preparing for challenges and thinking about how to cope, while also exploring the fact that it is natural to have different reactions and that seeking help is a strength. The presentation is wholly adaptable and works as a complete lesson or could be broken up into 5-10 minute sections for tutor time. There is a whole world out there to see, but travel is expensive, so this lesson looks at ways of seeing the world without breaking the bank, using skills and training young people might pick up on the way and alerts them to looking out for opportunities while students. This would go well as a follow-up to a presentation on Gap Years or a talk from a colleague about their travel experiences. It allows for discussion of current issues around misogyny and where they may stem from, while giving opportunities to consider the differences faced by men and women going out in terms of their own safety. This resource is a lesson on the value of language learning for the UK economy and beyond. It includes discussion points and could be used to inspire students to contemplate MOOCs in a language or language courses at university. This lesson is designed for early in the academic year to support students new to sixth form to appreciate the value of academic reading. It coincides with various September dates such as Read a Book Day, International Literacy Day and E-Book Day.
