The searches offer a really useful learning opportunity, enabling students to engage with the target vocabulary, and also developing German language skills in general. Word searches are really versatile too, useful in a range of learning contexts such as starters, finishers, refreshers and sub / cover lessons. It’s useful to have folders with a selection of vocabulary / theme word searches ready to go at any time of the school year.
Students are able to identify which direction words are located in within the grid by referring to the arrow key. As they move through the grids, their language skills are challenged in a range of ways - from straightforward vocabulary searching to scrambled letters and number sequence questions, featuring German mathematical language.
There is a single word search per page, portrait format, with a corresponding answer grid, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. There is a German number reference list too.
Grids 1 & 2 feature number words as prompts. Students look for them in the grid, and also write the corresponding number in digits for additional consolidation. Grids 3 & 4 feature numbers in digits as prompts, and students look for the corresponding words in the grids. They also write the number out in German for additional consolidation. Grid 5 & 6 has scrambled words as prompts, students work out what the numbers are and look for them in the grid, also writing the number in letters and digits. Grids 7 - 9 have number calculations as prompts, with students working out the response before they can look for the correct number in the grid, and also writing the number in letters and digits. Grid 10 has a range of questions and number sequences as prompts - again, students have to work out the correct response before they can look for the corresponding word in the grid.
There are two formats to choose from - the search grids and answer keys as separate printables, and also a file with both grids and answer keys together, so that you can print each grid and key double-sided, according to which suits your classroom needs better.

Word searches are a simple and effective way of encouraging students to engage with the German language, refreshing and reinforcing language and knowledge as they complete the grids. This set is aimed at advanced beginner German and intermediate German students. It focuses not only on the core vocabulary of days, months and seasons, but also on key dates in the German calendar, including all national official holidays - Bundeseinheitliche Feiertage - and a range of other Feiertage and important dates, such as Faschingsdienstag and der Fall der Berliner Mauer. Many of these dates, both national and / or regional across German-speaking countries, are religious in origin, such as Karfreitag and Allerheiligen.

GERMAN DATES, DAYS, MONTHS & SEASONS CHALLENGE CARDS
Challenge cards are an ideal learning activity for German class. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their German language skills in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. This set focuses on German dates, days, months and seasons, which is usually described as beginner German vocabulary. The questions however are aimed at advanced beginner German into intermediate German students, as working with more complex language as quickly as possible helps progress students’ learning and gives them in a more realistic experience of the language they are learning. Some questions address important dates or figures in German history, such as Tag der Deutschen Einheit and Angela Merkel.
Questions and answers address a range of grammatical concepts, such as articles, cases, word order and adjectival endings. Students may not at this stage have formally engaged with all the language and grammar included in the set, and this makes the activity equally about practising and consolidating German language skills and actively learning new language and grammar. The questions are entirely in German, including translation questions from both German into English and English into German.

It’s useful to introduce how to tell the time quite quickly with beginner Italian students, as it lends itself really well to promoting speaking in the classroom, discussing daily routines for example.
There are two key questions:
Che ora è? (1 o’clock, 5 past one etc) / Che ore sono? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. The second question is Vero o falso? and students write either vero or falso - where the answer is falso, remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation.
Each set comprises the following non-editable files:
= 60 question cards, 10 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper
= answer key & recording sheet
Laminate the cards if you can - they’re far more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years. I print individual sets on different colour paper so that they can be identified and organised easily. To save prep time and expense, distribute single pages of question cards, rather than cut out individual cards.

Parole Intrecciate Word searches are a simple and effective way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in Italian, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. These sets are aimed at beginner Italian students of all ages, focusing on I giorni della settimana and I mesi e le stagioni dell’anno. The target vocabulary also includes words such as oggi, domani, il mese prossimo, and la prossima stagione to enable students develop their Italian vocabulary and to engage with gender agreement. Additionally, ordinal numbers primo, ultimo, secondo and so on, provide a really useful language learning opportunity, and increase the challenge in a number of grids. Students have to apply their broader knowledge of Italian in order to know which word to search for in the grid, for example ***il secondo giorno della settimana?***. This makes the activity more comprehensive and engaging than a straightforward days, months and seasons of the year in Italian vocabulary exercise.
Each set features 10 differentiated word searches, with an increasing level of challenge. The grids are in landscape format, and have an accompanying answer key so that students can check their own responses. Focus on French ER verbs, also featuring a broad range of other French verb groups, including both auxiliaries être and avoir. Students may find access to a bilingual dictionary helpful. The questions are aimed at intermediate French into advanced intermediate French students, and are ideal for multi-skill language learning. A range of grammatical concepts are addressed in the questions too, such as preceding direct object agreement and negative sentences in French.
There are translation questions from both French into English and English into French. It is important for students to learn that ‘word for word’ does not work successfully as a translation strategy, that rendering language into what speakers of either language would actually say / write, or how they would express something either verbally or in writing, may be either quite similar, or quite different. Tense usage differs between the languages too, and the answer key reflects this for additional consolidation. The important thing to convey in their translation is accurate meaning.
The set comprises the following non-editable files:

The aim of the game is to arrange the clocks in the relevant order. Students will generally have several cards each, depending on the size of your class. Students can also set the cards on a table, so that they can see the timeline clearly. Playing in teams, against a time, using either a single challenge, or with both challenges together, is really popular - students find the competitive element really motivating and are genuinely keen to see which team can finish first, and whether they can beat their own time record. The games also work well as pair or small-group games.

The vocabulary is really useful for stimulating discussion about French Christmas practices and customs. Students also enjoy talking about other Christmas traditions they know or follow. The vocabulary list features the definite article, though some grids also have the indefinite article / plurals for additional challenge.
Grids 1-4 are French-French, where students are prompted with the French words, and look for them in French in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list to complete. Grids 5-8 are English-French, where the prompts are given in English, and students look for the French translation in the grid. They also write the French translation of the English word. Grids 9 and 10 prompt students with a specific Christmas image, and they look for the corresponding French word in the grid, also completing a French vocabulary list for additional consolidation.
There is an answer key for each word search, so that students can check their answers, or use for a little extra help if they need it. The word searches and answer keys are in portrait format, with arrows indicating in which direction the individual words are located.
There is an alphabetical French-English Christmas vocabulary list which students find really helpful. There are two formats: search grids and answer keys together, so that they can be printed out and copied double-sided, and search grids / answer keys as separate files.

Christmas provides a great learning opportunity in Italian class. Activities featuring Italian Christmas vocabulary provide a dual learning platform, where students can learn about Christmas in Italy, at the same time as revisiting and revising language they have already engaged with. Using Italian Christmas images and vocabulary enables students to engage with traditions and customs in Italian-speaking countries, comparing and contrasting them to other Christmas practices they know or follow. It’s a really useful way of stimulating discussion about Christmas in Italy and other Italian-speaking countries. Word searches are a simple and effective way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in Italian, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 25 Italian Christmas words, which will also help to develop students’ awareness of some Italian-speaking countries Christmas traditions and figures, such as La Befana and Babbo Natale. There are 5 Italian to Italian grids, where students are prompted with the Italian words, and look for them in Italian in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list to complete. There are also 5 English to Italian grids, where the prompts are given in English. There is an answer grid for each word search, so that students can check their answers, or use for a little extra help if they need it. The answer keys help them develop independence in their learning, and also provide them with an additional opportunity to engage with the Italian vocabulary. The word searches and answer keys are in landscape format, with arrows indicating in which direction the individual words are located.
The word searches are useful in a range of learning contexts - as starters, refreshers, finishers, fun-time fillers and for sub / cover lessons at any time during the Christmas / Holiday season.

Italian Christmas Io ho… Chi ha… ? is a whole-group lively and communicative language learning game. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompts of the Italian Christmas images, makes it perfect for practising, reinforcing and refreshing Italian Christmas vocabulary. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too.
The aim of the game is to arrange the cards in the relevant order. Students can either create a human chain, holding the cards themselves, or a card line, on the floor, a longish table or other flat surface. There are 32 Italian Christmas words with images, and it’s likely that students will have more than one card each per game, depending on the size of the class. The vocabulary and images provide a really useful stimulus for discussion about Christmas traditions and practices in Italian-speaking countries.
There are two games, each with a different challenge:
= Challenge 1: the nouns written out in full with the definite article, and the Q & A Io ho… Chi ha…? Students walk around, calling out the question.
= Challenge 2: the nouns are in a different order, with only the definite article, and the Q & A ***Hi…? Sì (No), io ho…***. This challenge puts students’ vocabulary recall to the test, and students walk around, addressing other students individually.
Play either as a whole-group game, or as a team game - which team can complete the challenge first? You can either play the challenges consecutively, or as a team game, swapping the challenges so that each team has a chance to play both challenges.
