Children in the factories
Whole lesson plus differentiated resources and activities for teaching: 'What were conditions like for children working in factories?'
Students begin by understanding why factories were built and an introduction to some of the conditions in factories.
Students then use differentiated sources about factory life to record:
Age of workers
Hours worked
Type of work
Injuries/accidents
Pay
Punishments
Students will finish by completing one of 3 differentiated activities including an exam style ‘describe two features’ question!

Industrial Revolution 1750-1900
How did life change between 1750 and 1900?
Whole lesson plus differentiated resources for teaching 11-14s ‘how did life change between 1750-1900?’
Students will start by looking at inventions and guessing whether they were created before or after 1750, and then look at the Industrial Revolution.
Students complete a table (differentiated) using the information sheet (PROVIDED!) about changes in;
Population
Work
Transport
Health and Medicine
Living Conditions
Finally, students complete one of 3 differentiated tasks summarising the changes between 1750-1900. Also includes a ‘quick quiz’ plenary!

Students will analyse a variety of Nazi propaganda methods through watching a video (with quiz) and looking at sources.
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to plan an answer one of two differentiated questions;
HA: ‘The use of propaganda was essential in helping the Nazis maintain control over the German people’. How far do you agree with this statement?
LA: Explain how and why Hitler and the Nazis used propaganda.

Rise of Hitler to Dictator
How did Hitler rise to dictator?
Suitable for teaching 11-14s the rise of Hitler.
Students first look at the difference between a democracy and a dictatorship, understanding the ideological differences, before looking at how Hitler became a dictator. Students will look at the 5 key events leading to Hitler’s rise:
Reichstag Fire
The Enabling Act
Night of the Long Knives
Hindenburg dies
Other factors
Students will do this by using information sheets (provided) on differentiated worksheets.
Finally, students judge the most important reason for Hitlers rise to power.

Treaty of Versailles - Fair or Unfair?
Whole lesson plus all resources needed for teaching **** ‘How fair was the Treaty of Versailles on Germany?’****
Students first look at the end of WW1 and how the Treaty of Versailles came about.
Then, students analyse the aims of the Big Three, using role play, sorting them into
Punish Germany and get revenge
Weaken Germany so it cannot threaten Europe again
Reward/compensate the Allies
Students will then look at the terms of the treaty using a video, and decide if those terms were fair or unfair by sorting card statements (differentiated!).

The Middle Passage - The Zong
For teaching 11-14s Slave Trade - The Middle Passage INCLUDING the case study The Zong!
Whole lesson plus worksheets on the Middle Passage. Students will first understand what the Middle Passage is with reference to the Triangular Trade. Students will then look at the conditions in the Middle Passage watching the clip from ‘Amistad’ and answering quiz questions on a worksheet (provided). Students will then look at the case study of the Zong. Here, students will read a passage about the case study of the Zong and choose from 3 differentiated options; answering comprehension questions, write a letter from the ship, or writing a speech to judge explaining why the slave trade owners on the Zong were guilty of murder.
This is a fascinating lesson which encourages students to consider the implications of the slave trade; and begin to look at the abolition of the slave trade.
