KS2 / KS3 Beginners Pets in French PowerPoint PPT Lesson Presentation (also in PDF format) and printable flashcards for your Les Animaux de Compagnie (Les Animaux Domestiques) unit. This 40 slide presentation (and more slides for games) introduces and reviews key vocabulary and phrases for Pets in French and includes activities and tasks. My French basics resources suit students beginning French and near beginners in Year 4, 5, 6 and 7 and equivalents. Many slides feature answers that appear when you click, for students to respond. There are also some very short reading comprehensions and an additional 20+ slides at the end of the presentation (making it 65 slides in total) form a âSplatâ game and a memory game (Kimâs game), which could be played in teams, with students working out which images are missing each time and giving the word in French.
In the Zip file, along with a PowerPoint version, there is an additional PDF version of the presentation. While the PDF version does not retain the ability for teachers to reveal answers by clicking, it will still help you introduce and review this topic if you do not have PowerPoint where you work. Also within the Zip file is a PDF of flashcards, with two on each page.
The presentation focuses on 12 key animal words (cat, dog, rabbit, horse, snake, guinea pig, hamster, parrot, lizard, mouse, turtle, goldfish) and linked questions and answers, such as âDo you have a pet?â, and phrases linked to petsâ names, ages and colours.

Â
The Powerpoint includes teaching points about gender / plurals of French nouns and the difference between using un / une / des , le / la / les and mon / ma / mes. It teaches children how to answer questions such as 'Quâest-ce que câest? (What it it?) and âTu as une gomme / un crayon?â (Do you have an eraser / pencil? etc). Includes words for door, window, chair, other furniture as well as pencil-case / schoolbag / stationery / school supplies items ( dans ma trousse / dans mon sac / mes affaires).
Due to differences between UK and US terms for some of these words, I have included 2 versions to cater for both. Please note the previews show the UK versions.
After the vocabulary has been introduced and key teaching points explained, further slides test the studentsâ vocabulary before the answer appears on the click of the mouse. There are tasks for students to understand and talk about what is in pencil cases and bags. Also, two interactive games are included. Un Jeu de Kim (Kimâs Game) is a memory game and works well with groups competing to be the first to write the correct French word on their whiteboard for the object that is missing. âFrappez les Objetsâ is a âSplatâ game, where a small group competes to hit or point at the correct picture when the teacher says the French object. A non-interactive PDF version of the PowerPoint is also included in case you donât have PowerPoint.
In most cases where terms differ between UK English and US English, both terms have been included.

Â
The presentation suits learners who are new or fairly new to French but it also includes teaching points about female and plural forms of the colour adjectives, which you can use if appropriate, plus an introduction to the words for âlightâ and âdarkâ colours. With almost 50 slides, it also includes pronunciation tips, an interactive Kimâs game and a slide for a splat game, where children can âsplatâ the colour thatâs been said in French by the teacher. Students are also invited to show the teacher classroom objects of a particular colour so if they already know the name of some classroom objects this will help. Alternatively, they could learn some for this activity. An additional US spelling version of the presentation is included.
The Four in a Row game works well in either A3 or A4 and can be used with the colour word cards. Use different colour paper or card when printing the word cards so that opponents can play with a different colour set. Students put their cards in a pile, taking the top one and choosing strategically which space to place it on (as long the colour on the space matches the word on the card!). Or laminate the board and students mark on their initial with a dry-wipe marker if they correctly say the colour in French. First to get four in a row - vertically, horizontally or diagonally - is the winner. There are also 8 cards for games of bingo and/or noughts and crosses (tic tac toe) and a 20-card âI HaveâŠWho Has?â game / Loop game. This latter resource features some light and dark versions of the colours.
The worksheet is included with and without a word bank for support. Full answer keys for the worksheet and puzzles. The printables are all in PDF format.

GAMES:
2 Four in a Row game boards to print and laminate. First to get four in a row - vertically, horizontally or diagonally - wins. Students roll dice, then choose a pets word from that number column to say in French. If correct, use a dry-wipe marker to put a symbol or initial in that box.
âI haveâŠWho has?â Cards / Loop Game: consolidate pets vocabulary in phrases alongside some numbers. Print and laminate the 30 illustrated cards, which form a continuous loop so you can start with any one. Distribute among players. First player reads the French side of one of their cards and all players check if they have the matching number of the correct animal. If they do, they reply in French, saying âJâaiâŠâ (I haveâŠ) and so on.
Active Oral Game - 36 game cards (18 identical pairs). Students are given a card each and move around to find the player with the matching card by asking and answering questions about pets. 2 versions: the first set has French prompts for lower ability or younger students and the other set has words in English only. If required, use a mixture of the two sets for differentiation.
Bingo / Noughts and Crosses (Tic Tac Toe): 8 cards for a group game of Bingo (the teacher or a student could read out words) or Noughts and Crosses (students take it in turns to say aloud a French pets word from their card). If cards are laminated, students could write on them with a dry-wipe marker.

Differentiated versions of 4 of the 6 activities are included (not the Hidden Word Puzzle or the display worksheet), with word banks, beginnings of words, or more challenging tasks etc included as appropriate. The one-star versions are the less challenging ones. The display worksheet is included with and without background illustrations. Full answer keys and an instruction page are included.
The Hidden Word Puzzle is an engaging alternative to standard worksheets, and makes an ideal starter, early finisher activity, review task, or homework. German Greetings and Introductions vocabulary has been translated, with some deliberate errors for the students to find. Students circle boxes containing errors, then assemble the letters from the circled boxes to reveal a German number word.
