This booster / intervention lesson is designed to help year 5 and 6 pupils who are working below the expected level develop their writing skills. The lesson is focused around writing a recipe for making a sandwich. This task will enable pupils to practise the following:

• Writing for a range of purposes and audiences
• Using simple devices to structure the writing and support the reader (e.g. headings, subheadings, bullet points)
• Using capitals and full stops mostly correctly
• Selecting vocabulary and grammatical structures that reflect what the writing requires

How long will this lesson take?
This lesson is approximately 60-80 minutes in length. Exactly how long the lesson will take is dependent on the needs of the pupils and their understanding. The lesson could be divided into two sessions as follows:
• Session 1: Introduction, preparation and planning
• Session 2: Writing, editing and improving.

What’s included?
• This resource includes an 11-slide teaching PPT which could potentially be used on its own to teach the lesson. The PPT is easy to use, adaptable and self-explanatory.

  2. Identify features in an example text
  3. Plan for writing a sandwich recipe of their choice
  4. Write a sandwich recipe
