What are IUPAC nomenclature rules? What is the difference between structural formula, skeletal formula, displayed formula, empirical formula and general formula? All this and more covered in this comprehensive lesson with questions and answers! This is a Year 12 A level lesson for Edexcel International Unit 1 – WCH11, but it can also be used for all UK exam boards. All the slides in this lesson are fully animated and include answers to every mini plenary question and exam question. Slide 2 - Lesson objectives (see thumbnail image)
Slide 3 – 4: difference between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons introduced to students
Slide 5 – introduction to saturated hydrocarbons (alkanes and cycloalkanes) with their general formulae
Slide 6 – Mini whiteboard activity: practise drawing displayed formulae of cycloalkanes
Slide 7 – Mini plenary questions to cold call the class
Slide 8 – explanation with examples of displayed formula
Slides 9 – 10: explanation with examples of structural formula
Slide 11: Mini whiteboard activity: practise drawing displayed, structural and molecular formula
Slide 12 – Independent practice activity (to be completed in books)
Slide 13 - learning pit-stop to check students’ learning. A series of questions of increasing difficulty, with the stretch and challenge (S+C) being the hardest. Answers animate onto the screen when you click
Slides 14 – 15: Introduction to skeletal formula with examples
Slide 16 – Mini whiteboard activity: practise drawing skeletal formula
