This KS1 history lesson introduces children to how toys have changed over time. Pupils compare old and modern toys, investigate materials and design, and create a simple timeline to show how toys have developed. The lesson links to the national curriculum theme of changes within living memory and builds comparison and sequencing skills.
What’s Included:
✔ Editable PowerPoint with starter images and key toy photographs
✔ Printable toy cards
✔ Example sorting mats for group activity
✔ Differentiated timeline worksheets for sequencing toys
Lesson Overview / Structure:
★ Starter: Children predict whether toys from a newly “discovered” old shop would include modern items like an Xbox or roller skates.
★ Main Activity: Pupils compare toy photographs such as spinning tops, clockwork cars, wooden skittles, handheld games consoles and robotic dogs. They discuss materials, batteries, and design. Groups then sort toys using mats or hoops before sequencing toy pictures on a Toy Timeline.
★ Differentiation: Support task – children sort 4 toys into old/new categories. Challenge task – children annotate timelines with arrows or words to explain how toys have changed (e.g. wood → plastic, no batteries → batteries).
★ Plenary: Children imagine they are opening a toy shop in the past, choosing one toy to keep and one to replace with a modern toy, before reflecting on differences between their choices and their grandparents’.
Why It’s Useful:
✔ Supports KS1 history strand: changes within living memory
✔ Encourages questioning and comparison skills
✔ Differentiated to suit a range of abilities
✔ Combines whole-class, group and individual tasks
