


Differentiated speech punctuation activities based on the picture book The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry.
Pupils will add missing punctuation to a series of sentences and paragraphs containing speech. Three differentiated sheets are provided, with answers.
The following features of dialogue and speech can be found in the sheets:
• Actual words spoken, with inverted commas on either side
• Words spoken separated from the reporting clause by a comma and question mark
• Reporting clause written before the words spoken, separated by a comma
• Variety of speech verbs
• Split speech: one sentence spoken but split into two by the reporting clause
• Split speech: two or more sentences spoken at once split into two by the reporting clause
• Two or more sentences spoken at once with the reporting clause at the beginning/end
