This engaging and thought-provoking double-lesson resource aids students in developing a secure understanding of Chapters Nine and Ten of John Boyne’s 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.’ In this section of the text, Bruno is taught by Herr Liszt and he ‘finds’ Shmuel whilst exploring along the wire fence at ‘Out-With.’
The comprehensive and colourful PowerPoint presentation enables students to understand the text through:
-Retrieving information;
-Inferring and deducing;
-Analyse the writer’s use of language.
The lesson focuses particularly on developing students’ understanding of Bruno’s naivety, which is evident in his discussions with Shmuel. This is achieved through several retrieval and inference activities. The students then focus on Boyne’s use of language in describing Shmuel. For this deeper thinking activity, an essay template (with embedded structure strip) is provided to offer guidance and support for students.
There’s a lot of content in the resource (20 slides in total) and in the past I have utilised this material over two or even three lessons. The lessons are best suited to students in KS3, and develop students’ knowledge and skills in relation to English curriculum objectives.
