This engaging and thought-provoking double-lesson resource aids students in developing a secure understanding of Chapters Three and Four of John Boyne’s 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.’ In this section of the text, Bruno and Gretel see the concentration camp, prisoners and soldiers out of the window from their new house.

The lesson focuses particularly on developing students’ understanding of the social and historical context, and making clear links between this and what they read in the story. They learn about key concepts such as the Holocaust, Auschwitz, the SS and the treatment of prisoners, and apply this knowledge to understand what Bruno and Gretel are seeing out of the window.

The comprehensive and colourful PowerPoint presentation enables students to understand the text through:
-Retrieving information;
-Inferring and deducing;
-Making clear and perceptive links between the text and its historical context.

The sessions include a range of retrieval, vocabulary, inference, explanation and deeper thinking activities. A clear, colourful and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation guides students through the learning.

There’s a lot of content in the resource (22 slides in total) and in the past I have utilised this material over two or even three lessons. The lessons are best suited to students in KS3, and develop students’ knowledge and skills in relation to English curriculum objectives.
