Description:
This is a whole lesson suited for KS3 science lessons on acids and alkalis. Pupils will test household items to see if they are acidic, alkaline or neutral. Originally designed to teach KS4 in a special needs school working towards entry pathways unit 6205 making chemical compounds.
Lesson overview:
- Starter: think pair share on what is an indicator to assessp prior knowledge.
- Main task: Complete a practical to test different household substances. Record results.
- Plenary: gap fill and self assessment.
Includes:

- Worksheet to record results, including a pH scale.
You will need for each group:
- Test tube rack
- 5 test tubes
- universal indicator
- funnel
- beaker (to dispense from larger containers although this can be skipped)
- Measuring cylinder

- water
- toothpaste (diluted)
- mouthwash
- bleach
- vinegar
- milk
- heartburn medicine
- lemon juice
- fizzy drinks
- hand soap
- baking soda
- egg
- apple juice
