This activity is focused on learning what semi-colons are and how they are accurately applied to sentences. It is aimed at children in Years 5 and 6. The activity uses Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo as a topic to learn how to apply semi-colons.
Each level of the sheet is progressively more challenging, while also building on the previous step. The initial task makes a comparison to compound sentence structure and then develops that into how a semi-colon can replace certain conjunctions. Then it uses a test-style format to get the pupil to apply their understanding. Finally, pupils are given a sentence stem and they need to use a semi-colon accurately to finish the sentence.
It contains an answer sheet.
