This lesson helps pupils in Years 1–2 identify and describe similarities and differences between school life today and in the past. Pupils will explore how classrooms, lessons, playtime, and uniforms have changed over time, considering reasons for these changes. Ideal for history or local studies topics, this lesson supports observation, comparison, and discussion skills.
What’s included:
✔ PowerPoint showing school life from the past and present
✔ Picture prompt cards of classrooms, lessons, playgrounds, and uniforms
✔ Paper templates for group ‘Time Travel School Day Plan’
✔ Lesson plan with starter, main activity, differentiation, and plenary
Lesson structure:
★ Starter – Watch a short clip of a 1950s–1960s school day. Pupils discuss what is similar or different compared to their own school, contributing ideas to a class mind map under headings such as classrooms, lessons, playtime, teachers, uniform, and equipment.
★ Main Activity – Explore key aspects of school life in the past using the PowerPoint or visitor input. Pupils work in groups to create a ‘Time Travel School Day Plan’, drawing and labelling activities, clothing, and rules. Differentiation includes picture prompts for support and short writing captions for challenge.
★ Plenary – Share group plans and discuss one thing pupils would enjoy and one thing they would not like about attending school in the past. Record responses on a class chart and discuss patterns.
Why it’s useful:
✔ Supports observation, comparison, and discussion skills
✔ Differentiated tasks for varying ability levels
✔ Encourages local history connections and group work
✔ Can be adapted for visitor input or multimedia use
