New online service coming soon with FREE downloads (including this resource) available! For more information visit

What’s included?
This download includes x2 resources which have been designed to use separately AND together. x20 pdf sheets included.

What’s it for?
This download includes two activities which can be used together. These resources enable learners to use their knowledge of the sounds s a t p i n to match initial sounds (graphemes) with the corresponding picture (resource 1). Once these ‘sound/picture’ jigsaw puzzles have been completed learners can use their knowledge of Phase 2/3 sounds to write these words (resource 2).

Who’s it for?
This resource set has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.

Resource Overview
The first resource is matching grapheme/picture word puzzles - x10 images for the sounds s a t p and x5 images for letters i and n.

The second resource involves sounding out these words and writing them - using sounds only in Phases 2 and 3 - perfect to practise and reinforce Phase 2/3 sound knowledge. This (second) resource is differentiated with a more and less supported version depending on your learners’ needs, the difficulty level is identified as an icon at the base of each sheet (right side).

Resource 1 - Grapheme/picture match puzzles
The tick in each jigsaw puzzle picture box (top right) indicates that this image is a word which can be sounded out. Once they have matched all the two-part jigsaw puzzles learners can write these words (resource 2).

How to use it?
Print out ‘Grapheme/picture match puzzles’ sheet onto card and cut along dots to separate ‘letters/graphemes’ from ‘pictures’. The set of cut up letters and pictures can be placed on a table top for learners to match as a ‘two part’ mini jigsaw puzzle.

Pictures included

  • s socks/skull/starfish/stamp (on a letter)/snail/slug/sun/sting (from a wasp/bee)/skeleton/swim
  • a abacus/ash/Africa/alarm clock/album/amber/alpaca/advent (calendar)/ant/asparagus
  • t tick/tent/tractor/trees/tooth/truck/toaster/tools/torch/trainers
  • p panda/planets/park/pumpkin/pelican/presents/printer/popcorn/pink/plant
  • i ink/igloo/insects/infant (not ‘baby’)/ingots (gold)
  • n numbers/north/napkin/nest/night

Resource 2 - Writing words resource
Two differentiated ‘writing words’ sheets are included. Page 1 provides more support as it includes the number of lines to write on - showing how many sounds are in each word. Page 2 has one line for each word.

  • Pages 1-2. Learners write the sounds/words for the pictures.

Red letters/lines (to write on) indicate a ‘tricky’ sound which may be difficult to hear clearly when the word is spoken. E.g. ‘planets’ is often said as ‘planits’ with an ‘i’ sound’. Learners may need help with these (red) letters/sounds.
