A carefully sequenced, highly engaging, multisensory RWI Set 1 phonics plan for pupils with SEND, ASD, and SEMH needs.
Focus one sound per week, following the RWI handwriting patterns, mnemonics, and images, weaving in Set 1 words for blending practice.
It’s systematic, repetitive, and sensory-rich so skills become embedded through overlearning.
Overall Structure
- 1 sound per week (e.g., Week 1 = m, Week 2 = a)
- Daily repetition in different sensory modes
- Same lesson routine every day for predictability (important for ASD/SEMH)
- Blend & segment words from Set 1 that match the taught sound
- Cumulative review — every Friday, revisit all previously learned sounds in fun games
