This is a lesson plan and supporting resources to accompany the counting legs maths picture book ‘One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab’ by April Pulley Sayre and Jeff Sayre. The lesson and tasks are differentiated so that they can be used for all ages from Years 1-6.

The KS1 lesson looks at multiplication, repeated addition and the commutative law.
The LKS2 lesson looks at problems involving multiplication and addition.
The UKS2 lesson looks at problems involving multiplication and addition, plus the an introduction to expressing these number sentences using algebraic formulae.

At the end of the lesson plan I have included the national curriculum links for each year group. All answers to problems on the powerpoints are provided.

It is a lovely book to own, but there are plenty of readings on youtube of the book if you are trying to save costs.

This is one of my favourite books! Seems like a book for younger children but there is SO much you can do with the older kids too - thanks for the ideas!

I delivered this lesson to a year 2 class and they absolutely loved it. Thanks!
