Migration Nation: Who Are the British?
Overview of Learning Sequence

In this four-lesson unit, students explore the central question: “Who are the British?” through the lens of migration and historical enquiry. The sequence introduces key historical skills while encouraging students to think critically about identity, diversity, and the shaping of modern Britain.

Lesson 1: Introduction to History and British Identity
Students begin by understanding what history is and how historians work. They explore the concept of British identity and begin to investigate early migration to Britain through discussion, mind mapping, and mini research.

Lesson 2: Migration and Chronology
Students define migration and learn how to place historical events in chronological order. They examine key migration events in British history, using case studies like the Ivory Bangle Lady to understand the long history of people moving to Britain.

Lesson 3: Understanding Migrants Through Sources
This lesson focuses on developing source analysis skills. Students learn to distinguish between primary and secondary sources, make inferences, and evaluate the usefulness and limitations of different types of evidence related to migration.

Lesson 4: Comparing Migrant Experiences
Using case studies of Viking and Windrush migration, students compare the experiences of different migrant groups. They explore reasons for migration, life in Britain, and the challenges migrants faced. The lesson culminates in a creative comparison task and encourages reflection on how migration has shaped British identity.
