This lesson specifically covers the extent of medical training for physicians, apothecaries and surgeons during the Renaissance period. Students identify what changed, why and then evaluate the most significant improvements.

The 22 slide fully resourced lesson contains activities, tasks, practice exam questions, printable resources and all background knowledge:

  • Slide 1: Title slide - Improvements to medical training in Renaissance England
  • Slide 2-3: Warm Up - Students decide how long medical students have to train for in the UK today for various roles such as dentists, doctors and pharmacists. Answers provided.
  • Slide 4-5: Recap - Students recap facts about medical training in Medieval England. Includes answers and challenge questions.
  • Slide 6-7: Recap - Students recap 6 facts about the features of hospital care and care in the community in Renaissance England. Answers given.
  • Slide 8-10: Task 1 - Students are given a sorting task and have to identify facts which suggest medical training did and did not improve. Also includes a challenge task, printable resource and answers.
  • Slide 11: Task 1 Alternative worksheet
  • Slide 12: Task 2 - Students identify 5 improvements in medical training before arguing which one was the most significant - sentence starters provided.
  • Slide 13: Task 3 - Students now use a sliding scale of 1-5 to evaluate how much progress there was in medical training. Features an extended writing analysis.
  • Slide 14: Challenge questions
  • Slide 15-16: Learning Review - Students use 8 images to identify and then describe the main improvements in medical training in the Renaissance period.

  • Slide 18: EXAM FOCUS - Examples of the 4 mark ‘Similarity and difference’ questions with suggested sentence starters.
