Welcome to the Shifts in Storytelling Series, an engaging exploration of the evolution of storytelling and language arts across time and cultures.

This series covers pivotal shifts in storytelling mediums and methods, including The Power of Oral Tradition, The Invention of Writing and Cultural Preservation, The Birth of the Novel, The Influence of the Printing Press, The Rise of Genre Fiction, Graphic Novels and Visual Storytelling, The Digital Revolution in Storytelling, and The Future of Storytelling: Interactive and Immersive Narratives.

In this 5-step reading comprehension series, students will explore these monumental transformations in storytelling, gaining a deeper understanding of how narratives have evolved through different eras and technologies.

Stage 1: Students start by matching ten key vocabulary words with their definitions. This activity instantly engages students and lays the foundation for better comprehension of the reading material.
Stage 2: Students then read the informational text independently or collaboratively, working in pairs, small groups, or centers.
Stage 3: Comprehension is assessed through six multiple-choice questions, ensuring that students grasp the material before moving forward.
Stage 4: Next, students dive deeper by reading a case study on one of the storytelling shifts, either independently or within their group.
Stage 5: A second set of six multiple-choice questions tests students’ understanding of the case study.

This bundle contains:

8 informational texts that explores each shift in storytelling
10 essential vocabulary words with definitions
8 case studies to explore and highlight a specific aspect in further depth
12 multiple-choice comprehension questions (6 per reading) complete with answer sheets for each concept
Answer strips for students to write their answers on (optional)

This versatile resource is perfect for educators seeking to provide an engaging and effective teaching tool. It can also be used as an independent work packet for students or as a resource for substitute teachers to ensure continuity in learning during absences. It is also ideal for use in small reading groups, fostering collaborative learning and discussion among students.

To maximize longevity, we recommend laminating the texts, vocabulary matches, and comprehension question sheets. This will maintain the quality of these materials, making them a valuable long-term asset in your teaching toolkit.

All the best in your teaching journey!
