Símbolos y Motivos, Color (Blanco y Verde)

El color desempeña un papel importante en la casa de Bernarda. El blanco es el color de la pureza y la virtud. Es el color de los vestidos de novia y de las sábanas del baúl de la esperanza que las hijas deben pasar su tiempo de luto cosiendo y bordando. También es el color de la limpieza. La casa nunca está lo suficientemente limpia para Bernarda. Ordena repetidamente al personal que vuelva a fregar todo, que blanquee el patio nuevamente y que limpie las huellas desordenadas dejadas por los extraños en la casa una y otra vez. El blanco es el color que simboliza todo lo que Bernarda quiere en su dominio (pureza, virtud, clase, estatus, etc.); por el contrario, su obsesión por mantener su existencia en la casa hace que el color blanco sea un recordatorio simbólico de cada fracaso tanto de ella como de sus hijas.

El color verde aparece en escasos momentos, principalmente en el Acto I, y está muy a menudo asociado con Adela. Cuando Bernarda solicita un abanico en el Acto I, Adela le pasa uno con “flores verdes y rojas”, que su madre luego rechaza porque no es el apropiado en negro. El vestido que Adela hace para su cumpleaños, que tiene que abandonar en favor de la ropa de luto negra, es un hermoso verde. Después de que los hombres han salido del patio en el Acto I, ella se lo pone y se escapa al patio bajo la apariencia de llamar a las gallinas.
