Help your students make sense of the periodic table with this hands-on, interactive activity. In this lesson, learners classify 12 elements into metals, nonmetals, metalloids, and rare Earth elements using physical properties and real-world examples.

Best suited for:

  • Key Stage 3 (Year 8–9): when introducing the periodic table, comparing metals and nonmetals, and exploring how properties link to uses.
  • Key Stage 4 (GCSE): as a revision or reinforcement activity for students who need more support consolidating metals vs. nonmetals, or as an extension task with metalloids and rare Earth elements.

Skills developed:

  • Classifying and organising information – sorting elements into categories.
  • Using evidence – applying physical properties and uses to justify decisions.
  • Scientific reasoning – linking element properties to their applications in technology and everyday life.
  • Collaboration – working in pairs/groups to complete the sorting task and worksheet.
  • Literacy in science – writing explanations and justifying classifications.

What’s Included:

  • Editable PowerPoint: introduces the four categories with visuals, guides the activity, and includes review questions + exit ticket.
  • Student Worksheets (PDF): classification table, explanation prompts, and a short exit quiz.
  • Element Task Cards (12 cut-and-go cards): Iron, Aluminium, Copper, Gallium, Carbon, Oxygen, Sulfur, Nitrogen, Silicon, Arsenic, Neodymium, Europium, Lanthanum.
  • Sorting Mats / Signs for group activity.
  • Three versions of the periodic table: plain, colour-coded, and black-and-white friendly.
  • Teacher Guide & Answer Key: step-by-step lesson outline, vocabulary definitions, timing, and completed answer sheet.

Why this resource works:

  • Designed for non-specialists as well as science teachers – clear instructions make it easy to run.
  • Engaging and hands-on – students are up and moving, not just copying notes.
  • Flexible – works as a full lesson (45–60 minutes), a shorter review activity, or a low-prep cover lesson.
  • Supports mixed-ability classes – simple categorisation task for all learners, with extension through metalloids and rare Earth elements.

This activity helps students move beyond memorising and really understand why elements are grouped the way they are – building confidence with the periodic table at KS3 and providing meaningful revision at KS4.
