This engaging and thought-provoking lesson resource aids students in developing a secure understanding of chapters 5 to 8 of Roald Dahl’s ‘James and the Giant Peach.’
The lessons are guided by a comprehensive and colourful PowerPoint presentation, and enables students to understand the text through:
-Retrieving information;
-Making inferences;
-Empathising with characters.
The sessions include a range of retrieval, vocabulary, inference, explanation and deeper thinking activities, guiding children towards fully comprehending the characters and events of the text. A clear, colourful and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation guides students through the learning, and provides the perfect accompaniment to the reading of the story.
The deeper thinking task in this lesson encourages children to empathise with the characters, expressing each character’s thoughts and feelings through a ‘hot-seating’ activity.
There’s a lot in the session (21 slides in total) so I have always broken the content into 2-3 lessons in the past. The lessons are most suitable for children in lower key stage 2, (they were originally used for those in years 3 and 4).
