This resource focuses on describing setting during creative writing. It focuses on the setting of a new planet.
It begins with a starter which focused on similes and encourages learners to come up with their own space related similes that they include later in their writing. This activity could be completed individually, in pairs, small groups or even as a whole class.
The resource then shows a number of different planets to give learners ideas and prompts to help them when sketching their own planet. They can use the senses map activity for this. First learners sketch their new planet then around it they annotate what they can see, hear, taste, touch and smell on their new planet. This activity really helps learners to think in detail about their planet and be as creative and descriptive as possible.
To help structure their narrative I have included a story mountain planning page and a guide to take them through each step. I have also included a story starter which all learners can use to begin their narrative (cut out provided to stick in jotters) or they can use this an example to create their own.
Finally I have included a word bank to start learners off. Then there is a follow up art task that could be completed as a fast finisher when they have completed their writing. However this could also be used as an art lesson and displayed alongside their writing. I have included a writing frame if you wish for learners to redraft their writing.
